Frigidaire Dryer E66: Heating Relay Malfunction
What E66 Detects
E66 specifically targets the heating element relay on the main control board. Unlike E61 (relay stuck on) or E64 (circuit open), E66 indicates the relay is behaving erratically: it may not switch at the expected time, it may chatter (rapid open-close cycling), or its feedback circuit is inconsistent with the command signal.
This is a board-level diagnosis code. The control board monitors its own relay performance through a feedback loop and E66 fires when the feedback does not match expectations.

Why the Relay Misbehaves
Contact bounce. Aged relay contacts develop micro-pitting that prevents clean switching. Instead of a single open or close event, the contacts bounce rapidly, producing electrical noise the board detects as relay malfunction.
Coil degradation. The relay coil draws a small current to keep the contacts engaged. As the coil winding insulation degrades from heat, resistance changes. The coil may not pull the contacts fully closed, or may release them too slowly.
Board trace damage. Copper traces on the PCB near the relay carry high current. Repeated thermal expansion can crack a trace, creating intermittent contact that mimics relay malfunction.
Diagnosis Attempt
E66 is more definitively a board problem than most dryer codes. However, before replacing the board:
- Unplug the dryer. Check the element circuit for shorts (measure element resistance: should be 8-15 ohms, not under 5 ohms). A low-resistance element puts excess load on the relay.
- Check wiring connections at the board connector for the element circuit. Loose pins create arcing that damages the relay contacts from the outside.
- If element and wiring are normal, the board requires replacement.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Board Replacement
Part: model-specific, $100-$180.
Remove the control panel at the top of the dryer (screws vary by model). Photograph all connectors. Release the board from its mounting clips. Transfer connectors individually. Ground yourself before handling.

Gallery vs. Standard
Standard models use a simple electromechanical relay for the heating element. Gallery models with Effortless temperature control use a combination of relay and triac for variable heat output. E66 on Gallery models may indicate relay, triac, or the feedback monitoring circuit. Gallery board replacement costs tend toward the higher end of the range.
FAQ
Can E66 cause overheating? An erratic relay can cause intermittent overheating between the moment the board commands off and the moment the relay actually opens. The high-limit thermostat provides backup protection, but prompt repair is warranted.
E66 appeared after a power outage. Related? Possibly. Power restoration after an outage can create a voltage spike that damages relay contacts or board traces. If E66 appeared immediately after power restoration, the spike damaged the relay circuit.
Is E66 the same on gas dryers? Yes. Gas models use a relay for the gas valve circuit. E66 on a gas dryer means the gas valve relay on the board is malfunctioning.
Frigidaire dryer E66 points to the control board relay. Our technicians confirm with testing before ordering parts. Schedule repair.
