Frigidaire Dryer E61: Heating Element Will Not Shut Off
This Is a Safety Code -- Act on It
E61 stands apart from most Frigidaire dryer error codes because it describes an active overheating condition. The control board detected that the heating element continues producing heat after the board commanded the element relay to open. The element should be off but is not.
Immediate action: Unplug the dryer or pull the circuit breaker. Do not simply press Cancel and walk away. A welded relay feeds continuous power to the element regardless of board commands.

Why the Element Stays On
The control board switches the heating element through a relay (electromechanical switch with physical contacts). When the board energizes the relay coil, contacts close and current flows to the element. When the board de-energizes the coil, contacts should spring open and cut power. Two failure modes prevent this:
Welded contacts (most common). Each time the relay switches, a small electrical arc forms between the contacts. Over thousands of cycles, these arcs erode and pit the contact surfaces. Eventually, the contacts weld together during an arc event. Once welded, the contacts cannot open even when the coil de-energizes.
Stuck contact spring. The return spring that opens the contacts can weaken from metal fatigue. The contacts remain touching by gravity or magnetism even though they are not welded. This is rarer but produces the same symptom.
Diagnosis
With the dryer unplugged, remove the rear panel. Locate the heating element (a coiled resistance wire mounted in a metal housing at the rear). Disconnect one of the element's two wires from its terminal. Plug the dryer in and wait five minutes. If E61 does not return and the element stays cold, the relay was welded. Replacing the board resolves the issue.
If the element somehow heats with one wire disconnected, you have a wiring fault where the element is receiving power through an unintended path. This requires tracing every wire in the element circuit.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Board Replacement
Part: model-specific, typically $100-$180. The board mounts behind the control panel at the top of the dryer. Remove the control panel screws, photograph all connectors, release the board from its mounting clips, transfer connectors one by one to the new board. Ground yourself before handling.

The High-Limit Thermostat Backup
Frigidaire dryers include a high-limit thermostat (safety thermostat) on the heater box. This device trips at approximately 250 degrees F and physically interrupts the element circuit. It serves as a backup when the board relay fails. If this backup trips, the element stops heating regardless of relay state.
However, many high-limit thermostats are one-shot devices (not resettable). Once tripped, they must be replaced before the dryer will heat again. Part: 137032600, $8-$15.

FAQ
Is E61 a fire risk? A dryer with a welded element relay can heat indefinitely if the high-limit thermostat also fails. While dual-failure is unlikely, leaving a welded relay unrepaired is unacceptable safety practice.
E61 appeared once and then went away. Should I still repair? Yes. A relay that welded once will weld again. The contacts now have a pitted surface that increases arc probability. Each subsequent weld event lasts longer.
Does E61 affect gas dryers? Gas Frigidaire dryers use a gas valve relay instead of an element relay. E61 on a gas dryer means the gas valve relay contacts are welded, keeping the burner lit. The repair is the same: replace the board.
