Bosch Washer E02: Motor Drive System Failure
E02 on Bosch washers indicates the motor control unit (MCU) cannot properly drive the drum motor. Bosch uses two motor technologies across its washer lineup — the EcoSilence Drive brushless motor (800 Series, newer 500 Series) and a traditional carbon-brush motor (300 Series, older 500 Series). E02 diagnosis differs significantly between these two systems.
EcoSilence Drive (Brushless) Motor — E02 Causes
The EcoSilence Drive is a direct-drive brushless motor that eliminates belts, pulleys, and carbon brushes. It connects directly to the drum shaft. E02 on this system indicates:
Inverter board failure: The MCU board converts AC power to variable-frequency DC to drive the brushless motor. Failed MOSFETs or driver ICs on the inverter section prevent proper motor control. The board typically costs $150-$250.
Hall sensor failure: Three Hall-effect sensors in the motor stator report rotor position to the MCU. If a sensor dies, the MCU cannot commutate the motor properly. The motor either will not spin or stutters erratically. The sensor set costs $25-$40 but requires motor extraction to replace.
Motor winding open or shorted: The stator has three phase windings. Measure resistance between each pair of the three motor wires — all three readings should be within 1 ohm of each other (typically 3-8 ohms each). A significantly different reading on one pair indicates a damaged winding.

Carbon-Brush Motor — E02 Causes
Worn brushes: Carbon brushes wear down with use. When they become too short (below 15mm), they cannot maintain consistent contact with the commutator. The motor runs intermittently or not at all. Brushes cost $15-$25 for the pair and are the cheapest fix for E02.
Commutator damage: The copper commutator bars on the motor armature can develop carbon tracking, burn spots, or uneven wear. Mild damage can be cleaned with fine sandpaper. Severe damage requires motor replacement.
MCU board failure: The brush-motor MCU uses a TRIAC to control motor speed. A failed TRIAC prevents motor operation. The board costs $120-$200.
Diagnosis Procedure
Step 1: Motor Type Identification
Check your model number on the label inside the door:
- WAW, WAT, WGA prefix (800/500 Series, 2018+): EcoSilence brushless
- WAP, WAS prefix (300 Series, older 500): Carbon-brush motor
Step 2: Motor Test
- Power off, unplug the machine (Bosch washers have accessible plugs)
- Remove the rear panel (Phillips screws)
- Brush motor: Inspect brushes through the brush holders on the motor body. If visible carbon is below 15mm, replace. Also check for spark marks on the commutator
- Brushless motor: Disconnect the motor's multi-pin connector. Measure resistance between each pair of the three phase wires
Step 3: MCU Board Assessment
If the motor tests good, the MCU board is suspect. Look for visual signs: burned components, swollen capacitors, or discoloration on the board. A burnt smell near the board confirms component failure.
