Bosch Washer E27: Door Lock Mechanism Failure
E27 on Bosch washers indicates the door lock assembly cannot confirm a secure closure. The machine's control board will not fill the tub or begin the wash cycle until the door lock engages completely. E27 means the lock mechanism attempted to engage but the position switch did not confirm within the timeout period (typically 15 seconds).
BSH Washer Door Lock Types
Bosch uses two distinct door lock technologies:
Bi-metal wax motor lock (300 Series): A heating element warms a bi-metal strip or wax pellet, which expands to push the locking pin into position. This type takes 3-5 seconds to engage and 2-3 minutes to release after power is cut (the wax must cool and contract). E27 on this lock type often indicates a burned-out heating element.
Motorized lock (800 Series, newer 500 Series): A small DC motor drives a cam or gear mechanism to lock the door. Engages in 1-2 seconds and releases almost immediately when commanded. E27 on this type usually indicates a jammed mechanism, worn cam, or failed motor.

Diagnosis Procedure
Listen at the Door
Close the door and press Start. Put your ear near the door lock area:
Bi-metal lock: You should hear a faint click after 3-5 seconds of a slight humming sound (the heater energizing). No sound = heater element is open. Click but E27 persists = position switch failure.
Motorized lock: You should hear a mechanical whirring for 1-2 seconds followed by a click. Whirring with no click = motor runs but mechanism is jammed. No sound = motor is dead or board is not sending power.
Electrical Testing
- Power off, unplug
- Remove the door boot gasket retaining band (spring wire or retaining ring around the front of the boot gasket)
- Peel back the boot gasket to access the lock assembly — it is mounted on the machine's front frame, aligned with the door hook
- Disconnect the lock's wire connector (typically 3-5 pin connector)
- Test resistance between lock pins per the wiring diagram on the tech sheet (located inside the machine's top panel). Key measurements:
- Lock solenoid/heater: 800-1500 ohms (bi-metal) or 20-60 ohms (motor)
- Door switch: Continuity when hook is pushed in, open when released
- Lock switch: Continuity after lock engages, open when unlocked
Door Hook Alignment
The door hook (metal or plastic tongue on the door) must enter the lock assembly's receiver cleanly. Over time, the hook or receiver can bend, especially if the door has been forced open while locked. Visually inspect the hook for bending or wear. A misaligned hook prevents full engagement even with a functioning lock.
Common Failure Patterns
Bi-metal heater burnout: After thousands of cycles, the heating element fails. The lock cannot engage at all. Audible clue: complete silence from the lock area when cycle starts.
Worn cam/gear teeth (motorized): The cam that converts motor rotation into linear locking motion wears over years. The motor spins but the cam slips, failing to push the lock pin to full engagement.
Door hook catch worn: The hook's latch surface develops a rounded edge that prevents the lock pin from catching securely. The door hook is part of the door assembly and usually requires replacing the door handle/hook unit.

Parts and Pricing
| Part | Bosch Number | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Door lock assembly (bi-metal) | Varies | $35-$65 |
| Door lock assembly (motorized) | Varies | $55-$95 |
| Door hook/handle assembly | Varies | $25-$45 |
| Boot gasket retaining band | Varies | $8-$15 |
Professional repair: $175-$400. Lock replacement takes 30-45 minutes. The boot gasket must be partially removed for access, which adds time but the gasket itself does not need replacement.
