Bosch Washer E18: Drain Timeout — Pump Running But Water Remaining
E18 on Bosch washers means the drain pump operated for its full timeout period but the pressure switch still detects water in the tub. The pump is running (you can hear it) but water is not evacuating. This is the washer equivalent of the dishwasher's E24.
Bosch Washer Drain System
The drain path in a Bosch front-load washer:
- Tub sump: Lowest point of the tub where water collects
- Coin trap (drain filter): Accessible from the front lower panel — a screw-off filter that catches debris before the pump
- Drain pump: Impeller pump mounted to the sump, driven by a small AC motor
- Check valve: Prevents backflow when pump stops
- Drain hose: Routes from pump output to the standpipe, laundry tub, or drain connection (maximum recommended height: 39 inches / 100cm)

The Coin Trap: First Line of Defense and First Thing to Check
Bosch front-load washers have a user-accessible coin trap behind the lower front panel:
- Open the access panel (small door at the bottom-right of the front panel)
- Place a shallow pan or towels under the drain area
- Open the coin trap emergency drain hose first — pull the small rubber tube from its clip and remove the plug. Let water drain into the pan. This prevents a flood when you open the coin trap itself
- Once water flow stops, unscrew the coin trap cap counterclockwise
- Remove the cap and filter — extract all debris
- Common finds: coins, buttons, bobby pins, bra underwires, small socks, hair ties, pen caps, tissues clumped into solid masses
- Inspect the pump impeller (visible through the coin trap opening) — spin it with your finger to verify free rotation
- Reinstall the coin trap cap, tighten securely, push the drain hose plug back in
This single step resolves approximately 50% of E18 cases.
When the Coin Trap Is Not the Problem
Drain hose kinked or too high: The drain hose must exit the machine, rise to a maximum of 39 inches (100cm), then descend to the drain connection. If the hose rises higher than 39 inches, the pump cannot push water over the hump. Some installations route the hose over a high shelf or through an elevated opening — measure the actual height.
Standpipe blockage: If draining into a standpipe, the pipe itself may be partially clogged with soap scum and lint. Disconnect the drain hose and run water directly into the standpipe to test flow. A plumber's snake may be needed.
Pump motor failure: If you hear no pump noise during the drain phase, the pump motor may be dead:
- Power off, unplug
- Access the pump (bottom front, behind the coin trap area)
- Disconnect the pump motor connector (2-pin)
- Measure resistance: expect 5-15 ohms. OL = dead motor
Pump impeller broken: The pump runs (motor hums) but the impeller vanes are broken or detached from the motor shaft. No water movement despite motor operation. Spin the impeller through the coin trap opening — if it spins without resistance, it has separated from the motor shaft.
