Most Likely Cause#

A gas smell from a Whirlpool gas oven or range is a safety matter before it is a repair. If the odor is strong, stop reading and act: do not light anything, do not use electrical switches, turn off the gas at the supply valve, ventilate, and leave the home if it is intense — then call your gas utility. For a faint odor with no other signs, the most common causes are a weak bake igniter letting gas flow a beat before it ignites, a loose gas connection, or a safety valve seeping.

How the Ignition Safety System Works#

A gas oven is designed so that gas only flows when it can be burned. The bake igniter heats up and, once it draws enough current, opens the safety valve to release gas that then ignites. When the igniter weakens with age, it heats too slowly, so gas is released a moment before there is enough heat to light it — that unburned gas is what you smell, especially as a puff at startup or before a delayed ignition boom. A loose fitting or a valve that seeps releases gas independent of the igniter. Because the safe cause (a brief startup whiff) and the unsafe causes (persistent leaks) smell similar, treat any strong or lasting odor as a leak until proven otherwise.

1. Watch a normal light-up. With the room aired out, observe whether the oven lights promptly. A long delay before the burner catches, with a whiff of gas first, points to a weak igniter.
2. Check for a delayed-ignition boom. A soft "whoomp" when the burner finally lights means gas accumulated before ignition — a classic weak-igniter sign that should be repaired.
3. Inspect the connections. With gas off, check the visible fittings behind the range for looseness; a technician should leak-test with solution rather than a flame.
4. Confirm full flames. Uneven or partial burner flames can leave unburned gas; note which burner or the oven itself is involved.
5. Rule out the supply. If the odor seems tied to the gas supply rather than the appliance, treat it as a utility issue and call the gas company.
