The self-clean lock#
Self-clean drives the cavity toward 900°F and bolts the door so it cannot open mid-cycle. On WFE and WFG ranges and WOS and WOD wall ovens, the door stays locked through a long cool-down and will not release early. Do not force it — pulling on a locked latch can bend the hook.
Reset the lock#
If the cycle has ended and the oven is cool but still locked, switch it off at the breaker for a full minute and restore power so the board re-reads the door. A door code like F5E1 or F9E0 points straight at the latch circuit and usually needs more than a reset.

When it is a real fault#
- A failed latch motor. The motor that swings the latch hook can burn out or jam, leaving the door bolted with no electrical release.
- A worn latch assembly. The latch assembly, a service part such as W10834736 on many models, wears or binds so the hook will not let go.
- A control board that never unlocked. If the board does not command the motor at cool-down the door stays shut, usually with a lock code showing.
Reaching the manual release#
Most Whirlpool ovens have a manual latch release reached once the top or a trim panel is off, worked with a Torx T20 driver. It sits close to the control wiring, so if you are not comfortable there, that is the point to call a technician rather than pry at the door.
