Most Likely Cause#
An uneven or discolored flame on a Whirlpool gas burner is a combustion problem, and the most common cause by far is clogged burner ports — food and grease block some of the little holes so gas comes out tall in places and not at all in others. Next is a burner cap that is not sitting flat, which sends the flame high on one side and weak on the other. If the flame is yellow or orange rather than blue, the air shutter is letting in too little air; if it is noisy and lifting off the burner, it is getting too much. Less often, the wrong orifice for your gas type or low supply pressure is to blame.
A healthy burner shows a steady blue flame with small yellow tips. Yellow, orange, or lopsided flames waste gas, cook unevenly, and — importantly — can produce carbon monoxide.
Yellow or sooty flames mean incomplete combustion, which can release carbon monoxide. Clean the burner and correct the air before you keep cooking on it, and make sure the kitchen is ventilated.

Clean the ports and seat the cap — start here#
Lift off the burner cap and head, soak them in warm soapy water, and run a straight pin through every port to clear the debris — never a toothpick, which can snap off and block a hole. Dry the parts completely before refitting, because leftover moisture makes flames sputter. Then set the cap back on flat and centered; spin it lightly and it should rotate without wobbling. A cap knocked askew during cleaning is a surprisingly common cause of a one-sided flame.
Air, orifice, and pressure#
If the burner is clean and level but the flame is still wrong, look at the air. The air shutter on the burner tube mixes primary air with the gas: too little air burns yellow and sooty, too much makes a noisy flame that lifts and can blow out. Slide the shutter until the flame is blue with small yellow tips. If a single burner burns wrong after the range was converted between natural gas and propane, its orifice is the wrong size — natural-gas orifices are larger than propane ones. And if every burner is weak, suspect supply pressure: confirm the shutoff is fully open and the flexible connector behind the range has no sharp kink, and if it persists, have the gas utility check the pressure.

Diagnostic Sequence#
- Remove the caps and heads, soak them, and clear each port with a pin.
- Dry everything and refit each cap flat and centered, checking it does not wobble.
- Light each burner and read the flame: blue with yellow tips is right, pure yellow needs more air, noisy lifting needs less.
- Adjust the air shutter on the burner tube until the flame is correct blue.
- If a burner is wrong only after a gas conversion, check that its orifice matches the gas type.
- If all burners are weak, verify the shutoff is fully open and the flex line is not kinked.
Repair or Replace#
Cleaning ports and reseating a cap cost nothing and cure most uneven flames. An air-shutter or orifice adjustment is minor work, and because Whirlpool shares parts across Maytag, KitchenAid, and Amana, a replacement burner head is inexpensive and easy to find. A genuine supply-pressure problem is the case that goes beyond the stove and back to the gas line.
