Speed Queen Dryer nP: No Power to Heater Circuit — Electrical Supply Diagnosis
The nP code on a Speed Queen dryer means No Power to the heater circuit. Specifically, the control board detected that the 240V supply (electric models) or the 120V heater enable circuit (gas models) is absent. The dryer can tumble (the motor runs on 120V) but cannot heat.
Electric Dryer nP: Half-Voltage Condition
Electric dryers require 240V — supplied by two separate 120V legs from the breaker panel. If one leg loses power (tripped breaker, loose wire, blown fuse), the dryer receives only 120V. The motor runs on 120V, so the drum tumbles normally. But the heating element requires 240V and will not energize.
Check your breaker: Electric dryers use a double-pole (2-handle) breaker. Both handles should be fully in the ON position. It is possible for one handle to trip while the other stays on — this delivers 120V but not 240V. Reset by pushing both handles fully off, then fully on.
Check the outlet: Using a multimeter, measure voltage at the dryer outlet:
- Between each hot terminal and neutral: should read 120V each
- Between the two hot terminals: should read 240V
- If one reads 0V: that leg has lost power
Check the power cord: For plug-in installations, the cord terminals can corrode or loosen. Disconnect the cord from the dryer terminal block and inspect for burned or corroded connections.

Gas Dryer nP: Heater Enable Circuit
Gas dryers use 120V for everything. nP on a gas model means the board is not receiving power confirmation on the heater enable circuit. This could indicate:
- The igniter circuit is open (failed igniter)
- The gas valve coils have failed
- A thermal fuse has blown (usually from overheating — check venting)
Thermal Fuse Check (Both Electric and Gas)
Speed Queen dryers have a thermal fuse in the heater circuit — a one-shot safety device that opens permanently if the dryer overheats. Test with continuity: the fuse should have continuity (beep). No continuity = blown fuse. Replace it, but also fix the overheating cause (usually blocked vent) or the new fuse will blow too.
