Miele Dishwasher Filter: Three Stages

Three stages, three different jobs#

Miele does not grind food. Where other brands fit a disposer to pulverise debris, Miele filters it out — which is why these machines are so quiet, and why the filters need attention.

Water leaves the tub through the coarse outer filter first, which stops fruit seeds, bone fragments and anything large. The fine mesh sits inside that cylinder and takes mid-size material, roughly grain-of-rice scale. The flat micro-filter underneath catches the finest particles before the water re-enters the circulation pump.

The coarse stage partly cleans itself: during the drain phase the pump reverses flow across its surface and flushes debris into the drain line. That stretches the interval between manual cleanings, but it does nothing for the fine and micro stages, which still fill up.

What each symptom points to#

Taking it apart#

No tools, and no reason to hesitate — Miele designed this for you to do.

1. Pull the lower rack out.
2. Lift the lower spray arm straight up off its hub. It releases without tools.
3. Grip the filter cylinder by its top handle and twist about 90 degrees counterclockwise until it frees.
4. Lift the cylinder out. The fine mesh comes with it — they are one assembly.
5. Lift the flat micro-filter screen out of the well beneath.
6. Look into the well for glass fragments, debris and scale, then wipe it with a damp cloth.
7. Seat the new micro-filter flat with no gaps at the edges.
8. Drop the cylinder in and twist clockwise until it locks.
9. Press the spray arm back onto its hub until it clicks.
10. Run a short rinse and confirm water is moving cleanly through.

Which assembly fits#

The design philosophy is shared across the G-series but the dimensions are not. G 4000 and G 5000 machines take the original cylindrical assembly; G 7000 and G 7900 use a slightly wider diameter with updated mesh material. Both remove the same quarter-turn way. The rating plate inside the door frame settles which one you need, and there is no aftermarket option.

Cleaning intervals and what wrecks filters early#

The assembly itself lasts 8 to 15 years — longer than most brands manage, because the fine filter uses higher-grade stainless mesh and the frame uses better plastics. What varies is how often it needs rinsing: weekly for daily cycles with heavily soiled cookware, every other week at an average 4 to 5 cycles, monthly if you tend to pre-rinse.

Three things end a filter before its time. Scrubbing the fine mesh with a stiff brush tears the material — use a soft brush under running water. Running the machine with the filter out sends debris into the pump and spray arms. And some aggressive descaling agents corrode the stainless mesh, which is worth checking before you pour anything in.

A monthly IntenseClean cycle dissolves the grease that would otherwise clog the micro stage, and quarterly use of Miele's own cleaner covers the whole water path including the filter well. While the assembly is out, look at the rubber gasket between cylinder and tub — a cracked one lets debris past the filter entirely, which mimics a torn mesh exactly.

Odour that survives a clean filter and an IntenseClean cycle is usually in the drain pump area or the drain hose, not the filter. Cracks in the filter well itself are tub-level work — book your repair.
