What locks the door#

LG uses a motorized latch assembly (EBZ37189611) that engages for self-clean and only retracts once the oven cools below roughly 550 degrees F. Heat stress can strip its gears and leave the latch engaged, or the control board can hang in self-clean and keep the lock powered.

Safety and tools#

Kill power at the breaker first — on hardwired LG built-ins that's the only safe disconnect — and on a gas model close the gas valve; if you smell gas, leave and call the utility. LG panels use Torx fasteners, so keep T15, T20, and T25 drivers handy to avoid stripping screws, plus a multimeter for testing.

The main causes#

• A jammed self-clean lock (most common). The motorized latch (EBZ37189611) strips its gears under self-clean heat and can't retract. After a power cycle, a buzzing at the top of the door means the motor is trying but the gear train is jammed.
• The board stuck in self-clean. An LG board can fail to exit self-clean, keeping the lock energized — the display reads self-clean complete but the lock icon stays lit.
• A bent hinge spring. Extreme self-clean temperatures can weaken a door hinge spring, and the misalignment keeps the latch from releasing.

Working it open, and the codes#

Wait at least an hour for the cavity to drop below 550 degrees F, then power-cycle the breaker for 2 minutes and listen for the lock motor. If an error code shows, note it — F9 and F11 are the codes commonly seen with this symptom. The parts most often replaced are the lock assembly (EBZ37189611), the control board (EBR86433605), and the door hinge (MEB63004901); some models also have a manual release behind the rear panel or through the top vent. Verify your serial-plate model before ordering, since LG numbers vary by year.

When to call a pro — and a holiday note#

If the door stays locked after cool-down and a power cycle, stop — forcing it risks bending the latch rail or permanently stripping the lock gears. Run self-clean a few days before you need the oven for holiday cooking, not the night before, so a stuck lock doesn't ruin the meal.
