LG Dryer dE: The Dryer Thinks the Door Is Open
dE means the door switch circuit is open — the control board does not detect a closed door. The dryer will not start a cycle, will not tumble, and will not heat. Safety interlock: the drum cannot spin with the door open, so the board will not run any function until the door switch confirms closure.
Three-Second Check
Open the door. Close it firmly. Listen for a solid click as the latch engages the strike. If dE clears and the dryer starts normally, the door was not fully latched — possibly from an overloaded drum pushing clothes against the door or a worn latch that no longer grabs the strike plate on the first push.
If dE persists with the door firmly closed and you hear the latch click, the switch itself, the wiring, or the board input has failed.

How the LG Dryer Door Circuit Works
LG dryers use a mechanical latch hook that engages a strike plate on the dryer frame. When the hook engages, it pushes a plunger on the door switch — a small microswitch mounted inside the door frame near the latch. The switch has two states: open (door open, circuit broken) and closed (door shut, circuit completed). The board monitors this circuit continuously — if the circuit opens during a running cycle, the dryer stops immediately.
Diagnosing dE
The Latch Mechanism (40%)
The latch hook on the door and the strike plate on the frame must align precisely. Over time, hinge wear causes the door to sag slightly, moving the hook out of alignment with the switch plunger. The door closes, the hook engages the strike, but the switch plunger does not depress fully.
Test: With the door closed, try to push the door inward at the latch side. If there is play (the door moves inward) and the dryer starts with the door pressed harder, the latch is not engaging the switch fully. This usually means hinge wear or strike plate misalignment.
Fix: Adjust the strike plate position. The strike is held by two screws — loosen them, slide the strike slightly inward (toward the drum), retighten. Some LG models have a secondary strike adjustment screw for fine-tuning.
The Door Switch (35%)
The microswitch is a mechanical device that fails after thousands of cycles. Internal spring fatigue prevents the contacts from closing even when the plunger is fully depressed.
Test:
- Unplug the dryer
- Access the door switch — on most LG dryers, the front panel or top panel must be removed
- Disconnect the switch wires
- Press the switch plunger manually and measure across the switch terminals: expect 0 ohms (continuity) when pressed, infinite when released
- If the switch does not show continuity when pressed — or shows intermittent continuity (flickers on and off) — replace it
The switch is a $8-20 part. Replacement takes 15-30 minutes depending on panel access.
Wiring and Connector (20%)
The wire pair running from the door switch to the main board passes through the dryer frame. Vibration from the drum motor over years can chafe the insulation where wires pass through metal clips or grommets, creating a break or short.
Inspect the wires from the switch to the board connector. Look for chafed insulation, corroded connectors, or wires pulled from their terminals. A wire that broke inside the insulation looks intact externally but reads open on a continuity test.
Board Input (5%)
The board's door switch input circuit rarely fails, but a power surge or water intrusion can damage the input transistor. If the switch tests good, the wiring tests good, and the switch produces continuity when pressed, the board is not reading the input.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Door Switch Replacement
- Unplug the dryer
- Remove the top panel (two screws at the rear, slide back and lift) or the front panel (varies by model)
- Locate the door switch — mounted in the front panel near the door opening, held by 1-2 screws or snap clips
- Disconnect the wire connector(s)
- Remove the old switch and install the new one (6601EL3001A or model-specific, $8-20)
- Reconnect wiring. Reassemble panels
- Plug in and test — the door should click, dE should clear, and the dryer should start normally

dE During a Running Cycle
If dE appears mid-cycle and the dryer stops suddenly, the likely cause is vibration-induced — either the switch is failing intermittently (contacts bounce open from drum vibration) or a wire connection is loose enough that vibration breaks the circuit momentarily. Both are safety features functioning correctly — the dryer detects a brief door-open signal and stops immediately.
Stacked Washer-Dryer and dE
LG dryers stacked on a washer are susceptible to dE from washer spin vibration. During the washer's spin cycle, the vibration can cause a marginal door switch contact to bounce open momentarily. If dE appears only when the washer below is spinning, the dryer door switch is worn enough that external vibration triggers it. Replace the switch — it is at end of life.

ThinQ Notification for dE
On connected LG dryers, the ThinQ app pushes a "Door not closed" notification. If you receive this while you are away from home, the dryer will not operate until you physically close and latch the door — there is no remote override for the door interlock.
