How to Replace a Maytag Washer Drive Motor
Maytag drive motors rarely fail before their 10-year warranty is up, so before you buy one, meter it to be sure — and check that warranty. Replacing it is an intermediate-to-advanced job of 45-75 minutes, and the motor is heavy.
Maytag backs its commercial-grade motors with a 10-year limited parts warranty, which is why a true motor failure is uncommon. When one does go, it shows as no response at all (an open winding), a hum without motion (seized bearings), or a burning smell (a shorted winding).
Tools and parts#
- Tools: Phillips #2 screwdriver, putty knife, 1/2-inch socket, multimeter, pliers
- Part: replacement drive motor (model-specific)
- Time: 45-75 minutes
- Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced
- Safety warning: Disconnect power and water supply. The motor can be heavy (15-25 lbs). Have a helper or support ready.

Step 1 — Confirm the motor really failed#
Rule out cheaper causes before ordering. If there is no hum at all, check for 120V at the motor connector during a cycle — power present but no response means an open winding. A motor that hums without turning has power but seized bearings or a bad start winding or capacitor. A burning smell is a shorted winding and a replace-now signal. And a motor that spins while the washer does not is a coupling or belt problem, not the motor. To meter it, unplug the harness and read across the run-winding terminals — 2-8 ohms is normal, and an open reading is a failed winding.
Step 2 — Reach the motor (top-load MVW)#
Release the cabinet spring clips at the two front corners with a putty knife, tilt the cabinet forward, and lift it off. The motor mounts at the base, driving the transmission through a belt or a direct coupling.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Step 3 — Reach the motor (front-load MHW)#
Pull the rear panel (6-8 Phillips screws). The motor sits at the back of the outer tub, usually low, and some models need a slight rearward tilt for room.
Step 4 — Disconnect and drop the old motor#
Unplug the motor harness, then on belt-driven models release the belt tension and slip the belt off the motor pulley, or on direct-drive models pull the motor straight off the coupling. Back out the 2-4 mounting bolts and lift the motor out, supporting it as the last bolt comes free so it does not fall.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Step 5 — Move over any shared parts#
Some models need the pulley, capacitor, or a wiring adapter carried from the old motor. Set the two side by side and transfer anything the replacement did not ship with.
Step 6 — Install the new motor#
Start all the mounting bolts before tightening any, so you can align the shaft with the belt or coupling, then snug the bolts evenly. Reconnect the harness, and on belt-driven models refit and tension the belt, or on direct-drive models seat the coupling fully.
Don't Void Your Warranty
Opening your appliance yourself may void the manufacturer warranty. Our repair comes with a 90-day guarantee, and we document everything for warranty compliance.

Step 7 — Test before buttoning up#
Restore power with the cabinet still off and run a short cycle. Watch that the motor starts without hesitation, runs quietly, reaches proper speed in both agitate and spin, and does not smell. Feel the housing after 5 minutes — warm is fine, hot is not. Then reinstall the cabinet.
Check the 10-year warranty first#
Maytag's 10-year limited parts warranty covers the drive motor and the stainless wash basket, so before you pay for a motor: find the model and serial numbers (inside the door or under the lid), confirm the purchase date, and call Maytag or book an authorized service visit. If it qualifies, Maytag covers the part, though you may owe labor after the first year.
Is It Worth Your Time?
Washer problems have dozens of possible causes from bearings to control boards. Average DIY troubleshooting: 3-5 hours plus parts ordering delays. Our technician diagnoses the issue in about 30 minutes — same-day appointments available.

When to call a professional#
Bring in a technician for a warranty-eligible failure (to keep coverage and get an authorized part), a front-load motor that needs the machine tilted (awkward and risky solo), a motor wired straight to the board with no separate connector, or any sign of gas or water intrusion near the motor. EasyBear technicians serving Sacramento and the Bay Area carry Maytag parts and diagnostic tools on every call.
