Most Likely Cause#
A loud Maytag washer almost always comes down to one of three things, and the sound tells you which: a deep grinding or rumbling that rises with spin speed is worn tub bearings; a heavy banging or knocking during spin is worn suspension — shock absorbers on a front-loader or broken support rods on a top-loader; and a harsh grinding or rattling only while it drains is an object stuck in the drain pump. A squeal or thump during agitation instead points at the drive belt, motor coupling, or the top-load shift actuator.
Maytag's MHW front-loaders and MVW top-loaders ride on the Whirlpool platform but use heavier counterweights and commercial-grade bearings, so when they get loud the culprit is usually mechanical wear rather than electronics. Start by noting when the noise happens — fill, wash, spin, or drain.
Before you inspect anything, disconnect power at the outlet or breaker and close both water supply valves. On a front-loader, water stays trapped in the boot after a failed cycle, so keep towels ready when you open the door. On a top-loader, let the lid lock disengage on its own — do not force the lid.

Working Through the Noises#
Worn tub bearings — grinding on spin#
The most common source of a loud Maytag is the outer-tub bearing. As its seal wears and water works in, the bearing roughens and howls, and the noise climbs with spin speed. Spin an empty drum by hand with the power off: grinding or a gritty drag confirms it. Bearings are the labor-heavy repair, but note that the drum on many Maytags is covered by the 10-year limited parts warranty on the drive motor and stainless-steel wash drum, so check your model and purchase date before paying out of pocket.
Suspension — banging on spin#
If the machine bangs or walks during spin, the suspension is worn. Front-loaders use a pair of shock absorbers under the tub; top-loaders hang the tub on four suspension rods with spring mounts. A worn shock or a snapped rod lets the tub swing until it slaps the cabinet. Push down on the tub and let go — it should settle quickly, not bounce. Replace shocks as a pair and rods as a set, and level the machine, because Maytag's heavier counterweight raises the forces that wear these parts when the unit sits unevenly.
Debris in the drain pump — grinding on drain#
A grinding or rattling that shows up only during the drain is almost always a coin, button, or bra wire caught in the pump impeller, often followed by an F8E1 drain fault or standing water. On a front-loader the pump sits at the lower-left behind the front access panel, held by three Torx T20 screws; on a top-loader you reach it by tilting the machine. Clear the obstruction and check the impeller turns freely — if a blade is broken or the bearing is rough, replace the pump.
Belt, coupling, motor, and the shift actuator#
A squeal or thump during agitation points at the drive system. On top-loaders, the shift actuator (the "splutch") that switches between agitate and spin fails far more often than the motor itself and is a quick, inexpensive part, so test it before condemning anything larger. The drive motor is the pricey component, but an F7E1 (motor speed not detected) with a grinding drive is the case that justifies pulling it. The F#E# code system matches Whirlpool's, so entering diagnostic mode and reading stored codes — for example F5E2 for the lock or F1E1/F1E2 for a board fault — helps confirm the subsystem before you open anything.

- Note when the noise happens — fill, wash, spin, or drain — to point at a system.
- With power off, spin the empty drum by hand; grinding or drag means bearings.
- Push down on the tub and release; a slow bounce or a thud means worn shocks or a broken rod.
- Run a drain and listen; a grind only here means the pump — clear it at the T20-mounted access.
- Enter diagnostic mode and read stored codes to confirm the subsystem.
- Check the machine is level and the counterweight bolts are tight before reassembly.
