- Safety: Unplug the microwave and wait at least 5 minutes, but treat the high-voltage capacitor as live regardless — it MUST be manually discharged before you touch anything inside.
Step by step#
- Unplug and wait. Pull the plug and give the internals at least 5 minutes to begin bleeding down — but do not rely on that, since the capacitor can stay charged for hours.
- Remove the outer wrapper. Take out the 6-10 Phillips #2 screws around the rear and sides and slide the shell off backward. That exposes the magnetron, capacitor, transformer, fan motor, control board, and door-switch assembly.
- Discharge the capacitor — critical. Find the large cylindrical capacitor and bridge its two terminals at once with an insulated-handle screwdriver or a discharge tool; expect a spark and a pop as the charge releases. Confirm zero voltage across the terminals with the meter on DC volts before going further.
- Locate the failed part. Samsung lays the internals out logically: the magnetron and its high-voltage companions (diode, capacitor, transformer) on the right, the control board and touchpad at the front and top, the door switches in the latch housing, and the fan motor in the upper rear.
- Swap the component. Photograph the wire positions, unplug the connectors, remove the Phillips #2 mounting screws, and fit the new part in the same orientation, reconnecting each wire to its correct terminal and keeping wires clear of the high-voltage area.
- Reassemble and test. Refit the wrapper and all screws, plug in, and heat a cup of water for 1 minute on high — noticeably warm water confirms the magnetron and power system work. Then open the door mid-run to confirm it stops instantly, verifying the door switches.

Common issues#
- Runs but does not heat: the magnetron, high-voltage diode, or capacitor has failed; check the diode and capacitor first since they are cheaper and easier than the magnetron.
- Completely dead: check the main fuse (typically a 250V, 8-20A ceramic fuse). A blown fuse means something overloaded the circuit, so check the door switches and capacitor before just replacing it.
- Sensor-cook acts erratically: the humidity sensor on the cavity ceiling may be grease-coated — wipe it clean, and replace it if it still misbehaves.
- Exhaust fan runs on high only: the fan-speed control uses a separate switch or relay on over-the-range models — check the speed selector and its wiring.
- Interior light is out or flickering: Samsung uses a 40W 130V or 25W appliance bulb; access is via an external panel on some models and behind the wrapper on others.
