Step by step#
- Check the water temperature. Maytag dishwashers want incoming water near 120 degrees F (about 49 degrees C) to activate detergent and cut grease. Run the kitchen tap hot, hold a thermometer in the stream, and if it reads below 115 degrees F, turn up the water heater. Running the hot tap for 30-60 seconds before you start the cycle puts hot water at the inlet immediately.
- Clear every spray-arm nozzle. Lift off the lower arm (it pulls off its center post) and unclip the upper arm from under the top rack. Under bright light, clear each hole with a wooden toothpick, pushing debris inward to flush out later; for hard-water scale, soak the arms in undiluted white vinegar for 30 minutes. Spin each arm after refitting to confirm it turns freely.
- Clean the Dual Power Filtration filters. Twist the cylindrical upper filter counter-clockwise and lift it out, remove the flat fine-mesh filter beneath, and take out the secondary ring filter if your model has one. Rinse and scrub all of it with a soft brush and dish soap — a clogged filter throttles the whole recirculation loop even with the pump at full speed. Refit flat mesh first, then the ring, then the cylinder twisted clockwise until it locks.
- Free and check the chopper. With the filters out, nudge the stainless chopper blade in the sump with a wooden utensil (never a finger) to confirm it spins; a jammed chopper cannot grind food, so waste recirculates onto clean dishes. Clear any object and wipe grease from the sump floor and walls with a vinegar-dampened cloth.
- Reassess detergent and loading. Fresh detergent matters — pods and powder fade a few months after opening. Confirm the dispenser opens fully during the cycle, and load so nothing tall blocks the lower arm's wide sweep, dirty sides facing the center spray.
- Test the inlet valve flow. If temperature and spray arms are fine but cleaning is still poor, the tub may be underfilling. Start a cycle and listen: fill should run about 90-120 seconds, and a shorter fill or rapid clicking means a restricted valve screen. To clean it, cut power, shut the sink supply, drop the lower access panel (two 1/4-inch hex screws), disconnect the supply line at the inlet valve, and brush the screen with vinegar before reassembling.
- Run a PowerBlast check. If your model has PowerBlast, run it empty with an upside-down mug on the top rack; water sitting inside the mug afterward confirms spray is reaching the top. If cleaning is poor even on PowerBlast, the cause is upstream — temperature, fill volume, or blocked arms. If Normal cleans poorly but PowerBlast is fine, you have marginal spray arms or slightly low temperature that only the boosted cycle overcomes.
- Confirm the mid-cycle drain. A dishwasher that does not fully drain between wash and rinse redeposits food. Listen for the drain pump's low hum between phases; residue that appears only at rinse points to a failing mid-cycle drain. You can enter diagnostic mode (press three buttons in a 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3 sequence within 8 seconds) to run each component, including the drain pump, on its own.
