What holds and spins a GE drum#
A GE drum is carried and driven by a small set of parts: support rollers under the drum, a belt (WE12M29) wrapped around it and the motor, an idler pulley (WE12X10014) that keeps that belt tensioned, and the drive motor (WE17X10010) itself, with glides or a bearing steadying the rear. When any of these wear, the drum no longer runs true — it wobbles, thumps, or rattles — and the vibration you feel is the drum losing its smooth support.
Work safely#
- Electric (GFD): unplug from the 240-volt outlet — that is lethal voltage.
- Gas (GTD): shut the gas supply valve and unplug.
- Clear the lint screen and check the vent before any work; dryer lint is highly flammable.

Working through the causes#
Worn drum support rollers (most common). The rollers the drum rides on develop flat spots and worn bushings over years, and the drum then bumps over them with a rhythmic thumping or rumble that you feel through the cabinet. Spin each roller by hand — it should turn freely and quietly; one that is stiff, wobbly, or grooved is the cause and rollers are replaced as a set.
Worn idler pulley or belt (common). The idler pulley keeps the belt tight, and a worn idler bearing adds a squeal on top of vibration. A frayed or stretched belt (WE12M29) also lets the drum turn unevenly. Inspect the belt for glazing or fraying and spin the idler; roughness or noise there means replacing it with the belt.
Imbalanced blower wheel (occasional). The blower wheel moves air through the dryer, and if it cracks, loads up with lint, or loosens on its shaft it spins out of balance and buzzes. Inspect the wheel for damage and build-up, and confirm it is seated tight on the shaft.
Dryer not level (common). A dryer that rocks on an uneven floor or worn feet walks and shakes hard during the spin, especially with a heavy load. Set a level on top, adjust the feet until it sits solid on all four, and confirm it no longer rocks when you push a corner.
Worn rear glides or bearing (occasional). The rear of the drum rides on glides or a bearing; when these wear, the drum drags unevenly and grinds. Check the rear support for wear and replace worn glides or a rough bearing so the drum turns true again.

Read the codes#
GE's Service Mode confirms the mechanical picture: with the dryer in standby, hold Delay Start and My Cycle for three seconds until the display shows "88" then "t1," and press Start to run the motor and drum-rotation tests. The stored codes are E1 (thermistor open), E2 (short), E3 (door switch), and E5 (exhaust high temp) — useful for ruling out unrelated faults while you chase the vibration.
