Dacor Gas Stove Burner Won't Turn Off: Causes

First, make it safe#

Turn the wall shutoff a quarter turn so the handle lies across the pipe. If you can't reach it, close the gas at the meter. Open a window and leave the range off until it's fixed. Never wrench the knob — a broken stem turns a stuck burner into an uncontrolled one.

What keeps a Dacor burner burning#

Three mechanical faults cause it, and only the middle one is a cheap first try:

1. The valve won't seat. Grease migrates into the stem and years of heat cycling round off the seat, so the valve stays cracked open at "off." A gas valve's internals can't be reliably cleaned, so the valve is replaced.
2. A stripped knob or shaft. The knob grips a flatted shaft; when either rounds off, the knob turns while the valve doesn't. A fresh knob is the inexpensive test, and if the shaft is chewed the valve goes with it.
3. A broken closing spring. The spring that snaps the valve shut can fail, letting gas pressure drift it open. It isn't a separate part, so again the valve is replaced.

A safe look with the gas off#

With the supply closed, pull the knob and inspect the shaft and its socket. Rounded flats mean a knob or shaft fault — try a new knob. If a good knob turns the shaft cleanly and the burner still won't cut off, the valve body has failed internally and needs a professional swap.

Before the holidays#

A burner you can only kill at the wall has no place feeding an all-day holiday cook. Have the valve replaced ahead of the season rather than working around it — the job opens the gas manifold and ends with a leak test, which is why it's a technician's, not a weekend project. Leave it to a pro#

Valve work means breaking into the gas manifold, pulling the control panel, and leak-testing afterward. On a Dacor range the valve is a specific part, and the correct fitting and torque matter, so this belongs with a licensed appliance technician.
