Step 2 — Reach the burner element#
How you get to the surface element depends on the cooktop. On a coil-element range, a plug-in coil simply lifts up and unplugs from its receptacle block at the front of the drip pan — the easiest case. On a Samsung smoothtop, the radiant element sits under the glass, reached by lifting the hinged cooktop or removing the rear panel and maindtop screws; Samsung's modular layout gives clear access. Identify the exact element that is failing before you go further.
Step 3 — Identify and disconnect the failed element#
Match the element to your replacement part, then photograph every wire connection before disconnecting anything — Samsung color-codes wires, but positions vary between model years. On a plug-in coil, the "wiring" is just the two prongs into the receptacle; on a radiant element, the leads land on the element's ceramic terminal block.

Refit any panels or the glass top, restore power at the breaker, and test the burner the element serves. Run it at full power for 5 minutes and verify even heating with no hot spots; for a smoothtop, confirm the element glows uniformly under the glass.
Troubleshooting Common Issues#
- New element does not work: recheck that every wire matches the photo, and look for a blown control-board fuse (a small glass fuse on some Samsung models) that the original failure may have taken out. On coil ranges, a burnt receptacle block is a common hidden cause — inspect it.
- Error code on the display: the control board may need a reset after the swap. Kill the breaker for 5 minutes, then restore power; if the code returns, it may point to a secondary failure.
- Burning smell on first use: a new element usually gives off a brief smell as manufacturing residue burns off, clearing within 10-15 minutes. If it persists or you see smoke, shut off immediately and recheck the connections.
- Self-clean lockout: if you triggered self-clean while testing, hold Cancel for 3 seconds to exit. The door lock releases once the oven cools below 550 degrees F.
