Amana Gas Stove Smells Like Gas: Causes & Fix

Emergency first#

If the odor is strong, treat it as a leak: do not flip switches, use a phone indoors, or strike a flame. Turn the shutoff valve behind or below the range a quarter turn so the handle sits across the pipe, ventilate, get everyone out, and call the utility — they will check for free. Only troubleshoot once the smell is faint and clearly tied to one burner.

Where a budget Amana range usually leaks#

Because AGR and ACR ranges use standard connectors and valves, the leak points are predictable and mostly at joints rather than deep in the appliance:

• Loose flex connector (most common). The corrugated line behind the range works loose over time, especially after the stove has been pulled out to clean. Brush soapy water on both ends and every union — growing bubbles mark the leak. Never wrap flare fittings in pipe tape.
• A burner not fully lit. A knob a hair off "off," or a ring lit on one side only, lets raw gas escape from the dark ports. Confirm knobs are fully off and clean the ports.
• A valve that won't fully close. On an older range a worn surface-burner valve seat weeps a faint, constant smell near the knobs even when off; that valve gets replaced, not cleaned.
• Cracked burner tube or orifice. Corrosion — worse in coastal, salty air — can split a tube so gas escapes before the burner head.
• Oven safety valve. If the odor comes from the oven with everything off, the safety valve may be seeping and needs replacing.

Confirm it yourself, safely#

Mix dish soap and water, brush it on the flex connector, its unions, and the manifold fittings, and watch for bubbles. Then light each burner one at a time and look at the flame: it should be mostly blue with only small yellow tips. Heavy yellow or lifting flames point to a fouled port or air-shutter problem rather than a supply leak.

Heading into the holidays#

Ranges get pulled out and pushed back for a deep clean right before the holidays, and that is exactly when a flex connector gets nudged loose. After you slide the stove back, run a soapy-water check on the connection before the first big meal. If the smell persists after you have checked the connectors and burners, don't keep guessing — book a visit to have the valves and connections leak-tested.
