Most Likely Cause#

An Amana dryer that takes far too long is, nine times out of ten, a clogged exhaust vent: lint builds up in the duct between the dryer and the outside wall, airflow drops, and moist air stays trapped in the drum instead of leaving the house. After the vent, the next suspects are a heating element that has partly broken so it warms but does not get hot, a worn drum felt seal letting heated air leak out, coated moisture sensors ending or extending cycles wrongly, and simple overloading.

What Usually Causes It#

The duct running from the dryer to the exterior wall collects lint over time, and even a partial clog restricts airflow enough to double your dry times. Amana dryers want at least a 4-inch rigid duct under 25 feet total; flexible foil traps far more lint than rigid metal. Disconnect the duct at the rear and brush it from both ends, vacuum the residue, and check for kinks or crushed sections. With the dryer running, step outside and feel the vent flap — strong airflow is good, weak or none confirms a clog.

Element, felt seal, sensors, and load size#

If the vent is clear but clothes come out warm rather than hot, an electric element has partly broken — some coils heat while others are open. Inspect the coil for a visible break, and check the temperature at the vent: healthy is around 125 to 135 degrees F, and below 100 points at the element. A worn front felt seal lets hot air escape between the drum and the bulkhead, so run a finger along it for gaps or thin spots. Coated moisture-sensor bars, near the lint filter, misread dryness after a buildup of dryer-sheet residue; wipe them with rubbing alcohol. Finally, keep loads to about two-thirds full, since a packed drum blocks the air from moving through the clothes.

1. Disconnect and clean the exhaust duct end to end, and confirm strong airflow at the exterior flap.
2. Replace flexible foil duct with rigid metal if you find it, and remove any kinks.
3. Check the vent temperature and inspect the electric element for a partial break.
4. Feel along the drum felt seal for gaps that leak heated air.
5. Wipe the moisture-sensor bars, and cut the load size if you tend to overpack.
