What F2 E5 means#
During self-clean the oven reaches 800-900F and locks the door for safety. When the cycle ends and the oven cools to about 550F, the board signals the lock to open. F2 E5 fires when the board sent that unlock signal but the lock did not confirm it opened within its 60-second window — and in most cases the door genuinely is still locked.
Smart or hardware? (and why the app lies)#
It is hardware — the lock mechanism or its motor failed under heat. The smart twist is a reporting gap: the app gets the "self-clean ended" event from the cloud but not the F2 E5, because the error happens after the cycle-end notification. So app users see "Cycle Complete — Oven Ready" while the door is actually locked and the panel shows the error. Trust the oven, not the app.

Wait for full cool-down#
The lock will not even try to open above about 550F, and self-clean cool-down takes roughly 45-90 minutes. If F2 E5 appeared during cool-down, give it another 30-60 minutes — the lock may release on its own as the temperature keeps dropping.
Power cycle, then manual release#
Kill power at the breaker, wait five minutes, restore it. The board re-checks the lock state on boot and may send a fresh unlock command; if the oven is cool enough, the lock should open. If it is still locked and the oven is cool (below 200F, safe to touch): find the manual lock release. On most Whirlpool wall ovens it is a small lever behind the top front trim — pull the trim forward gently and slide the release toward "unlock." On ranges, reach it by removing the storage drawer below and reaching up behind the door.

Replace the lock#
If F2 E5 returns on the next self-clean, the lock motor has failed for good. The door lock assembly (W11318498 for WOS72EC0H, W10526745 for older units) mounts behind the top panel on a three-pin harness; a swap runs about 30-45 minutes.
Why self-clean is so hard on the lock#
It helps to understand why this specific failure clusters around self-clean rather than everyday cooking. Normal baking tops out a few hundred degrees; self-clean runs the cavity to 800-900F to burn residue to ash, and the door lock has to hold that heat in for the whole cycle — its motor, plastic gears, and the relay on the board all sit near that extreme for an hour or more. Repeated exposure fatigues exactly those parts, which is why a lock that has cycled fine for years can fail the moment it is asked to release after a self-clean. It is also why the fixes are heat-timed: the lock is engineered not to move above 550F, so half the "will not unlock" cases are simply an oven that has not finished cooling.

Wi-Fi module vs. board#
F2 E5 does not involve the Wi-Fi module (W11201286) — if it is also acting up, that is coincidental. The main board (W11308348) can cause F2 E5 if its door-lock relay failed; test the lock motor directly with 120V, and if the motor runs on direct power but not through the board, the board relay is the fault. If your oven door instead locks unexpectedly during ordinary cooking, that is a different fault (a latch engaging during a non-clean cycle, F5 E1) needing prompt attention, not this self-clean timeout.
Prevent it#
Limit self-clean to once every 3-4 months — its 800-900F heat stresses the lock motor, board relay, and electronics more than anything else the oven does. Use steam clean (about 250F) for routine cleaning, which puts no stress on the lock. And never cut power mid-self-clean, which can jam the lock motor partway. If you never run self-clean, the lock never engages in normal operation, so F2 E5 simply will not occur.
