How a Whirlpool oven holds temperature#
On WFE and WFG ranges and WOS and WOD wall ovens, the AccuBake system leans on a single oven temperature sensor that reads about 1080 ohms at room temperature and climbs as the cavity heats. The control board compares that resistance to your setpoint and either cycles the electric element or modulates the gas valve to hold it. Because every temperature decision flows through that one sensor and one board, a fault in either shows up as an oven that runs hot, runs cold, or swings wildly.

Working through the causes#
Temperature sensor drift (25%). The sensor is the primary feedback for AccuBake, and one that reads wrong makes the board over-heat, under-heat, or refuse to run. F3E1 flags an open sensor circuit and F3E2 a shorted one. Disconnect power, reach the sensor probe at the rear of the cavity, and measure its resistance — roughly 1080 ohms at room temperature. A reading far off that, or one that does not rise with heat, condemns the sensor.
Bake or broil element failed (22%). Electric ovens use a bake element at the floor and a broil element at the ceiling, and both crack over thousands of heat cycles. Set Bake to 350 degrees, wait five minutes, and look: a healthy element glows evenly red, while dark spots or no glow mean a break. A failed bake element bakes cold or not at all; a failed broil element browns poorly on top.
Gas igniter weak (20%, gas models). The flat hot-surface igniter must draw enough current — typically above 3.0 amps — to open the gas safety valve. As it ages its resistance rises and its draw falls, so it glows orange but never trips the valve. The classic sign is a glowing igniter with no flame and a cold oven. Watch it through the bottom vent; if it glows but the burner never lights, replace it.
Control board fault (15%). The board runs everything — temperature regulation, timer, self-clean, door lock, and display — so its failures wear many faces: no heat, overheating, display errors, or a no-start. Power surges are the leading cause. Enter diagnostic mode with the model-specific three-button sequence within four seconds and check for stored faults such as F1E1 or F1E2 before replacing it.
Door lock and self-clean system (10%). The automatic lock must engage for self-clean and release once the oven cools below about 550 degrees. A failed lock motor, stripped gear, or lock circuit can block self-clean from starting or leave the door locked afterward, and F5E1 confirms a door-lock error. Start self-clean and listen for the motor within 30 seconds; silence means testing for voltage at the lock connector.
Thermal fuse or high-limit (5%). These safety devices cut power to the element or the whole board when they sense overheating, and a blown fuse or tripped high-limit stops all heating. Test for continuity — a good device reads near zero ohms — and always find and fix the overheating cause before resetting or replacing it.
Heat-damaged wiring (3%). The high-current element wiring carries 240 volts at 15 to 20 amps per element, and terminals can burn or corrode over years. That added resistance weakens heating or trips the breaker. Inspect every element and board terminal for discoloration or melting and replace damaged terminals with high-temperature-rated parts.

Read the codes first#
