Electric or gas decides where to look#
A no-heat Whirlpool splits cleanly by fuel. On electric WFE ranges and WOS/WOD wall ovens, heat comes from a bake element at the floor and a broil element at the ceiling, both fed 240 volts — a break in either kills that mode. On gas WFG ranges, a hot-surface igniter must heat up and draw enough current to open the safety valve before any gas burns. Sort out which you have first, because the two most common no-heat parts — the element and the igniter — live on opposite sides of that divide.
Work safely#
- Cut power at the breaker; 240-volt oven circuits carry lethal voltage.
- On a gas model, if you smell gas strongly, leave and call the gas company before touching anything.
- Let the oven cool fully — surfaces stay above 200 degrees for 30-plus minutes.

Working through the causes#
Temperature sensor open (25%). The board will not command heat if it cannot trust the temperature reading. An open sensor circuit throws F3E1 (a short throws F3E2), and the board responds by refusing to heat rather than risk a runaway. Disconnect power, find the probe at the rear of the cavity, and measure it — about 1080 ohms at room temperature. An infinite reading means an open sensor and a board that will not fire the element.
Bake or broil element failed (22%, electric). Elements crack after thousands of expansion cycles. Set Bake to 350 degrees, wait five minutes, and watch: a good element glows evenly red, while no glow or dark dead spots mean a break. A failed bake element leaves the oven stone cold; a failed broil element kills top browning while bake may still work.
Gas igniter weak (20%, gas). The flat igniter must pull more than about 3.0 amps to open the gas safety valve. As it ages its draw falls, so it glows orange but never trips the valve — the classic glow-with-no-flame, no-heat symptom. Watch it through the bottom vent; if it lights up but the burner stays dark, it needs replacing.
Control board failure (15%). The board issues the heat command, runs the timer, and drives the lock. A surge-damaged board can go dead or simply stop calling for heat. Enter diagnostic mode with the model-specific three-button sequence within four seconds and check for stored faults such as F1E1 before condemning it.
Door lock stuck (10%). If the self-clean lock is engaged or its circuit is confused, the oven may refuse to start a heat cycle, often with F5E1. Start self-clean and listen for the lock motor within 30 seconds; silence means testing for voltage at the lock connector.
Thermal fuse or high-limit blown (5%). These safeties cut all power to the element or board on an overheat, and once blown they stop heating entirely. Test for continuity — near zero ohms when good — and find the overheating cause before fitting a new one.
Burned element wiring (3%). The element wiring carries 240 volts at 15 to 20 amps, and a corroded or heat-damaged terminal adds resistance that starves the element or trips the breaker. Inspect the terminals at the element and board for discoloration and replace any with high-temperature-rated parts.

Read the codes#
Diagnostic mode does the narrowing for you: enter the model-specific three-button sequence within four seconds and the panel shows stored codes and offers element, sensor, lock, and fan tests. Common no-heat-adjacent codes include F2E1 (stuck key), F3E1 (sensor open), F3E2 (sensor short), and F5E1 (door lock).
Isolate it in three checks#
You can narrow a no-heat oven quickly. First, does the broiler work but not bake, or vice versa? On an electric oven that alone splits the two elements — if broil heats and bake does not, the bake element or its circuit is the suspect, not the shared board. Second, does the display light and accept a setting normally? A fully responsive panel that simply produces no heat points downstream to the element, igniter, or a blown thermal fuse rather than the board. Third, on a gas model, can you see the igniter glow through the bottom vent? A glow with no flame is the igniter; no glow at all shifts suspicion to the igniter's circuit or the safety valve. Running those three checks before you pull a panel usually tells you which of the seven causes to test first, and keeps you from replacing a healthy board.
