Read, reset, read again: what each result licenses#
Every row below is a state you can actually be in, and the right-hand column is what that state entitles you to conclude. The one thing none of them licenses is buying a part on the strength of a single unreset code.
- Diagnostic mode entered, a code displayed, written down. You have the subsystem. Go to the fault map row that matches it, do the physical checks for that row, then hard-reset and re-run diagnostic mode. That second read is what tells you whether the fix took.
- Diagnostic mode entered, no stored code, lights still flashing. Whatever the panel is doing is not a stored fault. That points at the bottom row of the map — sensor or thermistor drift skewing cycle timing without ever posting a code — and the tell is a diagnostic run whose phases are abnormally short or long.
- Diagnostic mode will not open at all. Fall back to counting: watch one full sequence, count the flashes, note the pause, and count again to confirm the same number. Write it down before anything else, because the soft reset in the next step erases it too.
- Code read, hard reset done, and it has not come back after a full cycle. It was stale — a record of something that has already passed. Nothing needs replacing, and replacing a part on the strength of a code in this state is the most common way money gets wasted here.

Working the Causes#
Primary component and drain. Whirlpool's TotalCoverage design feeds three spray arms and runs a chopper blade (part W10083957) in the sump ahead of the drain pump (W10876537, or WPW10348269 on older units). A blocked dual filter — the upper cylinder lifts out, the lower flat twists counterclockwise — or a jammed chopper shows up as a wash or drain fault; clear the filter and impeller first, and replace the pump only if its bearings are gone. Reach door-mounted parts through the inner panel (about eight Torx T20 screws), and underside parts by dropping the bottom panel on its two 1/4-inch hex screws.
Control board and inlet valve. If diagnostic mode finds no physical cause and the code points at the control side, the main board (W11305310, always verified to the model) has a failed output relay or a corrupted program. On the supply side, the inlet valve (W10872255) needs at least 20 PSI and a clear screen, and in hard-water areas mineral scale on that screen chokes the fill gradually — pull the supply hose and inspect the screen before condemning the valve.
Door and sensors. The door latch (W10862259) must hold a continuous closed signal through the cycle, so an intermittent microswitch drops the run mid-cycle; a dollar-bill test around the gasket catches a poor seal against the spray pressure. And the soil sensor and sump thermistor (about 50K ohms at room temperature) can drift and skew cycle timing without ever posting a code — a diagnostic run with abnormally short or long phases is the tell.
Clearing the Filter and Chopper#
Because a blocked filter or a jammed chopper drives the most common flash faults, clearing them is the first hands-on step:
- Pull the lower rack and lift the upper cylindrical filter straight out, then twist the lower flat filter counterclockwise to remove it.
- Rinse both under the tap and clear the sump of glass, food, and grit.
- Check the chopper blade and pump impeller in the sump for a jam — a stray tine clip or shard binds them.
- Reseat both filters, run a short cycle, and re-check diagnostic mode for a cleared code.
