Whirlpool Dishwasher Display Dead? Causes & Fix
Most likely a control-board or power fault has left the display dead, but on WDT700 and WDF500 tubs a water-supply restriction, a drain problem, a door-latch fault, or a drifting sensor can each show up as a blank or unresponsive panel, so start with power and the board before chasing the plumbing.
Start with power and the board#
The display is driven by the main control board, so a truly dark panel points first at the board or its power feed. Before opening anything, do a hard reset — disconnect power at the breaker for five minutes and restore it — since a transient glitch can blank the display and clear on reset. If it stays dark, the board and its connections are the primary suspects.
Causes at a glance#
| Likely cause | What you'll notice | Share of cases | First move |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary component failure | Panel dead or unresponsive | 30% | Hard reset, then inspect the board |
| Control-board signal failure | No display, no response | 20% | Test the control board |
| Water-supply restriction | Fault stalls, panel odd | 15% | Clean the inlet valve screen |
| Drain-system restriction | Cycle won't advance | 15% | Clear the filter and drain |
| Door-latch or seal issue | Won't start, blank panel | 12% | Test the door latch |
| Sensor or thermostat drift | Erratic behavior | 8% | Check the sensors |

Working through the causes#
Primary component failure (30%). The component most directly tied to the display on the WDT700 and WDF500 series has degraded. Start with a hard reset; if the panel stays dead, inspect the control board and its ribbon connections for damage. Control-board signal failure (20%). The main board, W11305310 on many models, runs the panel through relays and sensors. A failed output or a bad connection kills the display. Verify the exact model board, then test and replace it if the signal is gone. Water-supply restriction (15%). The inlet valve, W10872255, needs at least 20 PSI and a clear screen. Mineral scale on the screen restricts flow, stalling the cycle so the panel behaves oddly. Shut the supply and clean the valve screen. Drain-system restriction (15%). The drain runs through the dual filter — the upper cylindrical lifts out and the lower flat rotates counterclockwise through the chopper. A clog stalls the cycle. Clean the filter and clear the drain path, including the pump W10876537 or WPW10348269 on older tubs. Door-latch or seal issue (12%). The door latch, W10862259, must hold a continuous signal during operation. A failed latch stops the cycle and can leave the panel blank. The latch is tested and replaced. Sensor or thermostat drift (8%). The optical soil sensor and sump thermistor feed the cycle logic. Drifted sensors make behavior erratic, so they are checked when the board and plumbing are ruled out.
Diagnose it, step by step#
- Disconnect power at the breaker for five minutes, then restore it as a hard reset.
- Close the water supply valve if the symptom involves the fill.
- Enter diagnostic mode — press Heated Dry, Normal, Heated Dry within four seconds — to read stored codes.
- Clean the dual filter and the inlet valve screen to rule out plumbing stalls.
- If the panel is still dead, inspect the control board and door-latch connections.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Preventing a repeat#
- Clean the dual filter monthly so drain restrictions never stall the cycle.
- Plug the dishwasher into protected power so surges do not kill the board.
- Clean the inlet valve screen periodically to keep the fill unrestricted.
- Make sure the door latches firmly so the latch signal stays solid.
- Avoid slamming the door, which can loosen the latch and its wiring over time.
