Stop Maytag Gas Stove Uneven Flame for Good
An uneven Maytag burner flame is usually clogged ports — grease and boil-over residue plug the openings so the flame runs patchy. Soak the cap and head and pin every port clear. A wholly yellow or orange flame wants more air at the shutter, and a flame high on one side and low on the other means the cap isn't flat.
A blue flame is the goal#
A properly burning gas ring is steady blue with small yellow tips. When it turns yellow, orange, or uneven, the gas-to-air ratio is wrong, the ports are blocked, or something's damaged — and since a yellow flame can put out carbon monoxide while wasting gas and cooking unevenly, don't leave it.
How a Maytag range is built#
Maytag gas ranges share the Whirlpool gas platform but use heavier-duty parts, and the MGR and MER series are made to last; repairs follow standard Whirlpool procedures. That durability doesn't stop the caps and ports from fouling, though — those still need routine hand-cleaning like any burner.

Where the flame goes wrong#
- Clogged ports, first and foremost. Food, grease, and spillover block ports so some flames climb and others die. Soak the cap and head in warm soapy water and clear each port with a straight pin or needle — never a toothpick, which breaks off in the hole.
- An off-center cap. A cap that isn't seated flat sends gas to one side, tall there and weak opposite. It's the classic after-cleaning error; recenter and press it firmly into place.
- A poorly set air shutter. The shutter sets primary air: too little and the flame is yellow and sooty, too much and it's loud and lifts off. It's a sliding plate on the burner tube under the cooktop — slide it until the flame is blue with small yellow tips.
- A wrong-gas orifice. Natural gas and propane need different orifice sizes; a Maytag converted to LP with a burner still on the natural-gas orifice will burn incorrectly. Natural-gas orifices are the larger.
- Low gas pressure. If every burner is weak, look at pressure — a partly closed shutoff, a kinked flex connector, or a supply-wide issue. Make sure the valve is all the way open and the connector has no tight bends.
Diagnosing it#
Pull all the caps and heads, soak them about fifteen minutes in warm soapy water, run a pin through each port, and dry them before refitting. Reseat each cap so it turns freely without wobbling. Light each burner and judge the flame — blue with small yellow tips is right, straight yellow needs more air, and a roaring blue flame that lifts needs less. If nothing improves and all are weak, get the utility to check the supply.

Holiday readiness#
A Maytag range works hard through the holidays, and even burners make even cooking. Deep-clean the caps and ports before the season so every ring burns clean and blue. If cleaning and reseating don't cure the flame, or you suspect an orifice or pressure fault, book an EasyBear technician — they bring a gas-pressure gauge and Maytag burner components.
