Stop Maytag Gas Stove Smells Like Gas for Good

If the smell is strong, treat it as a leak#

Natural gas is dosed with mercaptan so you can smell a leak, and a true leak is a real fire and health danger. Don't operate light switches, phones, or any flame indoors. Turn the shutoff so its handle lies across the pipe, open the windows and doors, move everyone outside, and call the utility from there — the leak check costs nothing.

What a Maytag range is made of#

Maytag gas ranges share the Whirlpool gas platform but use heavier-duty components, and the MGR and MER series are built for durability. Gas-system repairs follow standard Whirlpool procedures, so parts and valves are widely stocked — but durable doesn't mean leak-proof, and the usual culprits are the same joints and burners as on any range.

Where a Maytag range leaks#

• A loose flex connector, most often. The flexible line behind the range slowly backs off, and moving the stove to clean speeds that up. Soapy water brushed on the fittings bubbles at the leak; never wrap a flare fitting with pipe tape.
• A burner that only half-lights. A knob not quite off, or a ring lit on one side, lets raw gas seep from the cold ports. Turn each knob fully off and clean the ports until the ring lights evenly.
• A tired gas valve. A worn valve seat on an older Maytag leaks a faint, constant smell by the controls even with the burners off; it gets replaced.
• A cracked tube or orifice. A split burner tube or corroded orifice releases gas before the head — look for cracks and corrosion, which salt air worsens.
• The oven safety valve. An oven-area smell with everything off points to a safety valve that no longer seals and needs replacing.

Diagnosing it yourself#

Brush a soap-and-water mix on both ends of the connector and each union and watch for bubbles. Take off the burner caps and heads, inspect for cracks, food, or corrosion, and set them back level. Light the burners one at a time: a good flame is blue with small yellow tips, while heavy yellow or a jumping flame means an air-shutter or orifice fault rather than a leak. With everything off, sniff around the oven to rule the safety valve in or out.
