Maytag Dryer F2 E1: Stuck Button Detected on Console Panel
F2 E1 on a Maytag dryer means a key on the console touchpad registered as pressed continuously for more than 30 seconds without a corresponding user action. The control board scans the button matrix at high speed, and any button that stays closed beyond the timeout triggers this code.
Dryer Console Design vs. Washer Console
Maytag dryer consoles operate in a hotter environment than washer consoles. Heat rises from the drum and convects around the console housing. This thermal stress accelerates adhesive degradation on the membrane switch layer and can warp the plastic backer, creating phantom button contacts.
Maytag Centennial and Bravos dryer consoles use a flat membrane keypad bonded to a rigid printed circuit board. The Maxima dryer (MEDB855) uses a capacitive touch panel with a glass overlay. F2 E1 diagnosis differs between these two designs.

Membrane Keypad Models (Most Common)
Moisture-Related Phantom Presses
Dryer consoles sit directly above the lint filter slot. Warm, moist air escaping past the lint filter seal reaches the underside of the console during every cycle. Over months, this moisture condenses on the membrane surface and creates low-resistance paths between traces.
Fix: Remove the console (2-3 rear screws, slide back, lift). Inspect the membrane switch underside for moisture droplets or corrosion tracks. Dry thoroughly. Apply silicone sealant along the console-to-top-panel seam to reduce moisture intrusion. Check that the lint filter seals properly in its housing — a worn seal allows excessive warm air to reach the console.
Adhesive Degradation
The membrane switch bonds to the console faceplate with pressure-sensitive adhesive. Heat cycling degrades this adhesive over 5-8 years, allowing the membrane to delaminate. A delaminated section can droop and contact the lower trace layer, simulating a key press.
Fix: Replace the membrane switch (WPW10251316 for MED6630, $20-35). Peel off the old membrane, clean the surface with isopropyl alcohol, apply the new membrane with firm even pressure.
Capacitive Touch Models (Maxima MEDB855)
Capacitive touch panels detect finger proximity through a glass layer — they do not rely on physical contact. F2 E1 on these models indicates either:
- Water film on the glass surface (from splashed laundry or cleaning products) activating the capacitive sensor
- A failed capacitive sensing IC on the UI board
Fix: Clean the glass overlay with a dry microfiber cloth. Do not use spray cleaners directly on the panel — liquid runs behind the glass into the sensing circuit. If F2 E1 persists with a clean, dry panel, the UI board needs replacement (W10565100, $90-150).

Safety First — Know the Risks
Gas dryers carry carbon monoxide and explosion risk. Even electric dryers involve 240V circuits that can deliver a fatal shock. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Testing After Repair
Enter diagnostic mode: press and hold Temperature + Wrinkle Reduction buttons for 3 seconds (or per model-specific instruction on the tech sheet inside the console). Run the button test — each button should register only when pressed and release cleanly. If any button stays active after release, the membrane switch or UI board is still faulty.
