LG Washer tE: The Temperature Sensor Is Out of Range
tE means the NTC thermistor (water temperature sensor) returned a resistance value outside the board's valid range — either open circuit (infinite resistance, broken sensor) or shorted (near-zero resistance, wires touching). The board cannot determine the water temperature and disables the heater as a safety precaution.
Impact on Washing
With tE active, the washer may refuse to start heated cycles (hot or warm wash) because the board cannot monitor water temperature for safe heater operation. Cold-water cycles may still run on some LG models since they do not require heater activation.
If the washer runs but uses only cold water regardless of the temperature setting, a drifted thermistor (reading within range but inaccurate) may be the cause. This produces incorrect temperature regulation rather than tE — the board reads a plausible but wrong value.

Testing the Thermistor
The thermistor is a small capsule sensor mounted in the outer tub or in the heater housing at the bottom of the machine.
- Unplug the washer
- Access the thermistor — typically accessible from below or by removing the front panel. It sits near the heater element in the tub sump area
- Disconnect the 2-wire connector
- Measure resistance at room temperature (approximately 68 degrees F): expect 5,000-6,000 ohms for LG washer NTC sensors
- Hold the sensor in warm water or in your hand: resistance should decrease noticeably
- Infinite = open (replace). Near zero = shorted (replace). No change with temperature = degraded (replace)
Heater Element Check
While accessing the thermistor, also test the heater element (LG front-loaders with internal heaters):
- Disconnect the heater leads
- Measure resistance: expect 15-25 ohms
- Measure from either terminal to ground: should be infinite. Any reading = ground fault (replace heater)
A ground-faulted heater can sometimes produce tE as a secondary symptom if the ground current path affects the thermistor circuit.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Thermistor Replacement
- Unplug the washer
- Remove the front panel (bottom screws, tilt out) or access from below
- The thermistor mounts in a socket in the tub or heater housing — pull straight out
- Disconnect the wire connector
- Install the new thermistor (6322FR2046C or model-specific, $8-18)
- Push into the socket until seated. Reconnect wiring
- Reassemble and test on a warm or hot cycle

tE and Sanitize Cycles
LG's Sanitize cycle raises water to 150+ degrees F using the internal heater. Without a working thermistor, the board cannot verify the sanitize temperature was reached. tE not only prevents the Sanitize cycle from running but also invalidates the NSF/ANSI 184 sanitization claim. If sanitization is important (baby items, medical textiles), fix tE promptly.
Cold Water and tE
If you only use cold water cycles and tE appeared, the thermistor still affects operation. The board monitors temperature even in cold cycles to verify the water is within expected range and to prevent accidental heater activation. Some LG models allow cold cycles with tE; others lock out all cycles.
