How to Repair Whirlpool Washer Pressure Sensor
An F3 E1 or F3 E2 code on a Whirlpool washer points to the water-level pressure sensor — but the cheap, common cause is the little air hose that feeds it, not the switch. Check the hose first, test the sensor second. Plan on 20-40 minutes. Difficulty: intermediate.
How the pressure sensor works#
Whirlpool washers gauge water level with a pressure switch (an analog sensor on newer models) connected to the tub by a thin air hose. As the tub fills, air pressure rises in the hose and the sensor reports the level to the control board. If the hose kinks, cracks, or clogs with detergent sludge — or the sensor itself drifts — the board loses its level reading and posts F3 E1 or F3 E2. Because the hose fails far more often than the sensor, it is where you start.

Step-by-step#
1. Confirm the code#
Enter diagnostic mode — on many models, hold the Delay button about 3 seconds then press Power — and read the stored code against the tech sheet inside your machine. F3 E1 and F3 E2 are the pressure-sensor codes; other F-codes point elsewhere (see the table). Confirm before you buy any part.
2. Open the machine#
Take off the top panel, usually three Phillips screws at the rear, then slide it back and lift. The pressure switch is a round component near the top of the tub with the air hose running to it and a wiring connector. Photograph the connector before you touch it.
3. Inspect the air hose first#
Trace the clear or black air hose from the pressure switch down to its port on the side of the tub. Pull it off both ends and look for kinks, splits, or a plug of grey detergent sludge inside — any of these throws off the reading. Blow through the hose to confirm it is clear, check that both ends seat tightly, and replace it if it is cracked or stretched. A fresh hose fixes many F3 E1 and F3 E2 faults on its own.
4. Test or replace the sensor#
If the hose is sound, turn to the switch. With the multimeter, check that it responds as air pressure is applied — a mechanical switch changes continuity, an analog sensor changes resistance. A dead switch gets replaced; match the part to your model using the tech sheet. Transfer the hose and connector to the new one.
5. Reassemble and test#
Reseat the connector until it clicks, refit the top panel, restore power and water, and run a fill on a Normal cycle. Watch that the machine fills to the right level and shuts the valve — no F3 code, no overfill.

Troubleshooting#
- F3 returns right after reassembly: a connector is not fully seated — reopen and reseat every one you touched.
- Machine overfills: the hose is leaking air or off its port; reseat it and leak-test with the soap solution.
- Fills then drains at once: the drain hose slipped deeper into the standpipe — reset it to about a 6-8 inch insertion.
