Three GE washer codes are covered here, and between them they describe the two ways a load ends badly. E2 is a drain error — a clogged filter, a kinked hose, or a pump blocked by whatever the pockets held. E8 is the opposite complaint, an overflow, which comes from a pressure switch that has lost its read, an inlet valve stuck open, or a control board acting on a bad level signal. E4 is an unbalanced load: uneven distribution, one heavy item, or a machine that is not sitting level on its feet.

A three-code index can afford to be blunt about which faults cost money. E4 ends at load handling and levelling legs, not at a part, and the guide says so rather than walking a reader toward a sensor. E2 begins at the filter and the hose run, because those are free and they are usually the answer. E8 is the one that needs a measurement: the pressure hose and air trap are checked before the switch, since a blocked hose makes a working switch report nonsense and a new switch would inherit the same blockage.

An overflow code deserves the water shut off rather than another cycle. If the inlet valve is stuck open, the machine will keep filling whether or not the display has been cleared, and the pan under it is not a solution.
