LG Washer tcL: Time to Clean the Tub
tcL is not an error code — it is a maintenance reminder. LG front-load washers display tcL after approximately 30 wash cycles to remind you to run the Tub Clean cycle. The washer continues operating normally; tcL is informational only and does not prevent any cycle from running.
Why Tub Cleaning Matters for Front-Loaders
Front-load washers use less water than top-loaders. The small water volume means detergent residue, fabric softener buildup, and organic debris (skin cells, hair, lint) are not fully flushed from the outer tub, the boot seal folds, and the dispenser housing. Over time, this residue creates a biofilm that produces the musty "front-loader smell" that LG owners frequently report.
The Tub Clean cycle uses hot water at maximum temperature with extended agitation to dissolve and flush this buildup. Running it monthly prevents odor, mold in the boot seal, and the bacterial biofilm that can transfer onto laundry.

Running the Tub Clean Cycle
- Remove all laundry from the drum
- Add a washing machine cleaner tablet (Affresh, Tide Washing Machine Cleaner, or similar) OR 1 cup of white vinegar poured directly into the drum
- Select the Tub Clean cycle on the control panel (labeled "Tub Clean" or designated by a tub icon)
- Press Start. The cycle runs 1.5-2 hours at high temperature
- After the cycle completes, tcL clears automatically
- Leave the door open for 30 minutes to air-dry the tub interior
Do Not Use Bleach With Vinegar
Some guides recommend bleach for tub cleaning. Never mix bleach and vinegar — the combination creates chlorine gas, which is toxic. Use one or the other, not both. Commercial washing machine cleaners are formulated specifically for this purpose and are the safest option.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Preventing the Smell Between Tub Cleans
Leave the door ajar after every wash. The single most effective odor prevention. The door boot seal traps moisture in its folds when the door is closed. Leaving it open 2-3 inches allows air circulation to dry the seal and tub interior.
Wipe the door boot fold monthly. Pull back the front lip of the rubber boot seal. Wipe the inner fold with a cloth dampened with diluted bleach or vinegar. This fold collects hair, debris, and moisture — the primary mold growth zone.
Use HE detergent at correct dose. Excess detergent leaves more residue for biofilm to feed on. Use the amount recommended for HE machines.
Do not leave wet laundry sitting. Remove clothes within 30 minutes of cycle completion. Wet clothes in a closed drum create a warm, humid environment that accelerates mold growth.

Dismissing tcL Without Running Tub Clean
You can clear tcL by pressing and holding Temp and Options/Spin Speed simultaneously for 3 seconds (varies by model). This dismisses the reminder without running the cycle. The counter resets and tcL reappears after another 30 cycles. This is not recommended — the reminder exists because front-loader maintenance is genuinely necessary.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

If the Smell Is Already Established
If your LG washer already smells musty:
- Run Tub Clean with a commercial cleaner
- Immediately run a second Tub Clean with 2 cups of vinegar
- Wipe the entire door boot seal — inner folds, under the glass, and the drain channel at the bottom
- Pull the dispenser drawer out and clean the housing cavity (mold grows behind the drawer)
- Check the drain filter (behind the lower kick panel) — trapped debris decomposes and contributes to odor
- Leave the door and dispenser drawer open until fully dry
If the smell persists after this deep clean, the boot seal may have mold embedded deeply in the rubber that cleaning cannot reach. Replacement of the door boot seal ($40-80 for the part) is the definitive fix.
tcL is a reminder, not a repair. But if your LG washer smells despite running Tub Clean, the boot seal may need replacement — book maintenance service.
