LG Washer IE: No Water Reaching the Tub
IE means the washer started a fill cycle but the pressure switch detected no water level increase within the fill timeout (typically 8-10 minutes). The board energized the inlet valve solenoids but water did not arrive.
60-Second Supply Check
Before touching the washer, check the supply. Turn on the hot water faucet nearest to the washer. If no hot water: your water heater is off or the supply is interrupted. Turn the cold faucet — if both are off, a main valve is closed or there is a plumbing emergency.
If the faucet runs normally, check the two supply valves behind the washer. Both should be fully open (handles parallel to pipes). After plumbing work, movers, or appliance installations, these valves are frequently left closed or partially closed.

Root Causes
Supply Valves Closed or Restricted (40%)
The most common non-washer cause. Both valves must be fully open. A valve that is 90% closed still passes a trickle of water — enough to hear but not enough to fill the tub before the timeout.
Inlet Screen Blockage (25%)
Each inlet valve has a small mesh filter screen at the hose connection point. These screens catch sediment. In homes with older galvanized plumbing, mineral scale accumulates rapidly.
Clean the screens: Close supply valves. Disconnect hoses at the washer end. The screens are visible inside the valve inlet ports — small mesh cups. Pull them out with needle-nose pliers. Rinse under running water. If heavily scaled, soak in vinegar for 30 minutes. Replace screens and reconnect.
Failed Inlet Valve Solenoid (20%)
Each valve has a solenoid coil. When the board sends 120VAC, the coil generates a magnetic field that lifts the valve's internal plunger. A burned coil = no magnetic force = valve stays closed.
Test: Disconnect the valve's 2-pin connector. Measure across the solenoid coil pins: expect 900-1,100 ohms. Infinite = burned open. Test both hot and cold solenoids — they fail independently.
Kinked or Frozen Hoses (10%)
Supply hoses can kink when the washer is pushed back against the wall. Braided stainless hoses resist kinking better than rubber hoses. In cold climates with washers near exterior walls, hoses can freeze internally during extreme cold.
Pressure Switch or Hose (5%)
If the pressure switch hose is plugged (soap residue buildup in the tub air dome), the switch reads full even when the tub is empty. The board does not command fill because it thinks water is already present. This is an unusual cause that produces IE only if the blockage appeared suddenly.

Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

IE on Cold Wash Only
If IE appears only on cold-water cycles but hot-water cycles fill normally, the cold inlet valve solenoid has failed. Test the cold solenoid specifically (the connector with wires running to the cold side of the valve).
Conversely, if IE appears on hot cycles only, the hot solenoid failed. Warm/cold mixed cycles may work partially (one valve fills while the other does not).

Smart Diagnosis for IE
LG's ThinQ app Smart Diagnosis can identify which specific valve the board is commanding and whether the pressure switch is registering fill. Before tearing into the washer, run Smart Diagnosis — it may narrow the issue to a specific valve or the pressure system, saving diagnostic time.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

After Fixing IE
Once the fill issue is resolved, run a test cycle and verify both hot and cold water reach the tub at adequate flow. The fill should be audible (rushing water sound) and the tub should reach operating level within 3-5 minutes on a Normal cycle.
LG washer not filling? We check supply pressure, screens, and valve solenoids on the first visit — most IE repairs under $150. Book fill diagnosis.
