Common problems for this model#

1. Gas valve coils fail intermittently — 30%. The dryer heats, then quits mid-cycle as the coils weaken; the part is the coil set 5221EL2002A.

Gas safety comes first#

Gas repairs are not casual DIY. Check the gas supply line connection annually for leaks using soapy water, and if you ever smell gas, shut off the supply and call a professional rather than running the dryer. Beyond the gas side, the single most important task on any dryer is keeping the lint path clean: clean the lint filter before every load and clear the exhaust duct to the exterior once a year. A restricted exhaust vent is the number one cause of both poor drying performance and dryer fires — and on this dryer it is also the direct cause of the blown thermal fuse at number three, since a fuse trips to protect a dryer that cannot vent its heat.

Common questions#

Why does it heat for a few minutes then stop? That is the classic gas valve coil failure: the coils weaken with heat and can no longer hold the gas valve open, so the burner cuts out and the drum tumbles cold. Replace both coils (5221EL2002A) as a set, since they fail together.

What is the difference between DLE and DLG? DLE models are electric, using a heating element (5301EL1001J); DLG models are gas, using an igniter and gas valve coils. The drum, belt, rollers, motor, and control board are identical.

How do I check the igniter? With power on a timed cycle, it should glow bright orange-white within seconds; a dim glow that never lights the gas, or no glow at all, means the igniter has failed.
