LG Dishwasher OE: Water Stays in the Tub After the Cycle
OE triggers when the board commands a drain cycle and the water level sensor still detects standing water after the drain pump has run for the maximum allowed time (typically 4-8 minutes depending on cycle phase). Water is supposed to leave the tub through the drain pump, through the drain hose, and into your kitchen plumbing. Something in that path is blocked or the pump itself has failed.
Start From the Outside and Work In
Drain problems have a specific diagnostic hierarchy. Start with the easiest, most external causes and work inward toward the machine only if external checks pass.
Check 1: Garbage Disposal Knockout Plug (Brand-New Installs)
If this LG dishwasher was just installed and OE appeared on the first or second run, the problem is almost certainly the garbage disposal knockout plug. New disposals ship with a solid plastic plug inside the dishwasher drain connection port. The installer must punch this plug out with a screwdriver and hammer before connecting the drain hose. If the plug is still in place, the drain hose connects but water has nowhere to go.
Test: disconnect the drain hose from the disposal. Look into the disposal's dishwasher port. If you see a solid disc instead of an open hole, that is the knockout plug. Punch it out from inside the disposal using a screwdriver. Retrieve the plastic disc from inside the disposal so it does not jam the grinder.
Check 2: Air Gap or High-Loop Configuration
If your installation includes an air gap (chrome dome on the counter next to the faucet), check it for blockage. Remove the chrome cap and the inner cap. Clean any debris. Air gap blockages cause backflow that prevents drainage.
If no air gap, verify the drain hose has a proper high-loop — the hose must rise to at least the underside of the countertop before descending to the disposal/drain connection. Without this loop, dirty sink water siphons backward into the dishwasher.
Check 3: Drain Hose Path
Disconnect the drain hose from the disposal/tailpiece connection. Hold the end over a bucket. Start the dishwasher on a drain-only function (or short rinse cycle). If water pumps out strongly, the hose and pump are fine — the blockage is at the disposal or plumbing connection.
If water barely trickles: remove the hose entirely and inspect it. Lay it straight and run water through it. Food debris and grease accumulate in the corrugated sections. A stubborn blockage in the hose can be cleared with a bottle brush or by running hot water through from both ends.
Check 4: Drain Pump Filter
LG dishwashers have a multi-part filter in the tub floor. The fine mesh filter is designed to catch food particles before they reach the drain pump. If this filter is heavily clogged, water cannot flow from the tub sump to the pump inlet efficiently.
Remove and clean the filter assembly. The cylindrical filter lifts with a counterclockwise quarter-turn. The flat mesh screen beneath it lifts out. Flush both under running water. Use a soft brush on stubborn deposits.
Check 5: Drain Pump Motor
If all external paths are clear and the filter is clean, the pump itself may have failed:
Listen during drain command: Humming = motor runs but impeller jammed. Silence = motor dead or not receiving power. Clicking = board is trying to start the motor but it stalls immediately.
Test the motor electrically: Disconnect the pump's 2-pin connector. Measure across the pins: expect 5-15 ohms. Infinite = motor winding is open (dead). Near zero = shorted winding.

Drain Pump Replacement
- Breaker off. Towels under the kick plate area
- Remove kick plate (2 screws at the bottom frame)
- The drain pump is the smaller pump on the side of the sump — it connects to the drain hose. Do not confuse it with the larger wash pump
- Disconnect the pump electrical connector. Disconnect the drain hose from the pump outlet
- The pump mounts with screws or a bayonet twist-lock. Remove and extract
- Install the new pump (EAU62043403, $40-70). Reconnect hose and electrical
- Run a drain test before reinstalling the kick plate — verify no leaks at the pump connections

OE With Standing Water: Emergency Drain
If the tub is full of dirty water and you need to empty it now:
- Lay towels around the front of the dishwasher
- Open the door slowly — water level rises to the door opening height. If water is above the door sill, be prepared for overflow
- Use a cup or ladle to bail water into a bucket
- Soak up remaining water with towels or a wet/dry vacuum
- Remove the filter assembly and check for obvious blockage before calling for service

OE After Disposal Replacement
A new garbage disposal installation is the single most common trigger for OE on previously-working LG dishwashers. Either the knockout plug was not removed, or the drain hose was repositioned with a kink, or the hose was pushed too far into the disposal port (creating a restriction). Always verify the dishwasher drains properly after any disposal work.

Why OE Smells Bad
Standing water in a dishwasher tub develops anaerobic bacteria within 24-48 hours, producing a sulfur/sewer smell. If OE has been present for more than a day, run a hot sanitize cycle with a dishwasher cleaner tablet after resolving the drain issue. Clean the door gasket fold at the bottom — trapped food debris in that gasket lip combines with stagnant moisture to create persistent odor even after the drain is fixed.
Check Valve Failure
LG dishwashers have a rubber check valve (flapper) in the drain pump outlet that prevents backflow. If this valve is stuck closed (debris wedged under it), water cannot exit even with a functioning pump. If stuck open, sink water flows backward into the tub between cycles. Access requires removing the drain pump — the check valve is molded into the pump housing on most LG models.
