LG Dishwasher IE: No Water Entering the Tub
IE means the dishwasher attempted to fill with water and detected no flow within the fill timeout window (typically 8-10 minutes). The board energized the inlet valve solenoid, waited for the flow meter or water level sensor to register incoming water, and got nothing.
Fastest Diagnosis: Under 60 Seconds
Before touching the dishwasher, check your kitchen faucet hot water. Turn it on. If there is no hot water anywhere in the kitchen, this is a supply problem, not a dishwasher problem. Check your water heater, check for a closed main valve, check if someone shut the supply for a plumbing project.
If hot water runs fine at the faucet, look under the sink at the dishwasher supply valve (usually a small angle stop on the hot water pipe). Is it open? After kitchen remodels or plumbing work, this valve is accidentally left closed roughly 15% of the time IE appears.

Why the Dishwasher Gets No Water
Supply Side Issues (60% of IE cases)
These have nothing to do with the dishwasher itself:
Supply valve closed or partially closed: The angle stop under the sink controls flow to the dishwasher. Partially closed = insufficient flow rate = fill timeout. Fully open means the handle is parallel to the pipe (perpendicular = closed).
Kinked supply line: The braided stainless line from the valve to the dishwasher can kink where it bends behind the cabinet. A kink that restricts 80% of flow still allows a trickle — enough to confuse diagnosis because you hear water but IE still triggers.
Frozen supply line (seasonal): In cold climates where dishwashers are installed against exterior walls or in garages, the supply line can freeze in extreme cold snaps. The line appears intact but ice inside blocks all flow.
Inlet Valve Issues (30%)
Clogged inlet screen: Every LG inlet valve has a fine mesh screen at the hose connection point. This screen catches sediment, pipe scale, and particulate. In homes with older galvanized plumbing, this screen can block in as little as 2-3 years.
Inspection: disconnect the supply hose from the valve body (breaker off, supply off first). The screen is visible inside the valve inlet — a small cup-shaped mesh. Remove it with needle-nose pliers. Rinse under the faucet. If encrusted with brown/white scale, soak in white vinegar for 30 minutes.
Failed solenoid coil: The inlet valve is electrically operated — a coil of wire wraps around a plunger. When the board energizes the coil, magnetic force lifts the plunger to allow water flow. A burned coil (open circuit) prevents the valve from opening.
Test: disconnect the valve's 2-pin electrical connector. Measure across the coil pins: expect 900-1,100 ohms. Infinite = coil is burned open. This is the definitive test for valve failure.
Seized plunger: Even with a good coil, mineral deposits can cement the plunger in the closed position. The coil generates magnetic force but cannot overcome the mechanical resistance. You may hear a faint buzzing from the valve (the coil energizing but the plunger not moving).
Board Issues (10%)
The board's valve output relay or triac may have failed open, delivering no power to the solenoid coil. The valve is fine, the supply is fine, but the board never commands the fill.
Test: measure voltage at the valve connector during a fill command. Should see 120VAC. Zero voltage = board failure.
Inlet Valve Replacement
- Breaker off, supply valve closed
- Remove kick plate. Place towels under the valve area (left-front on most LG models)
- Disconnect the supply hose from the valve inlet. Have a container ready — residual water in the line drains
- Disconnect the outlet hose (spring clamp to the tub fill spout)
- Unplug the electrical connector
- Remove the mounting screw(s) holding the valve bracket to the chassis
- Install the new valve (AJU72992601, $25-45). Apply pipe tape to the supply connection threads
- Reconnect outlet hose, electrical connector, and supply line
- Open supply valve with breaker still off — check for leaks at all three connection points
- Restore power and run a test fill
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

IE After Moving the Dishwasher
IE appearing immediately after pulling the dishwasher forward (for floor replacement, leak investigation, or any access) is almost always a supply line issue. Pulling the unit forward can kink the braided supply line, partially close the valve if the line pulls on it, or crack a fitting that was already corroded. Re-inspect every connection point before assuming a component failure.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

IE on First Use After Installation
New LG dishwashers showing IE on first run: the installer did not turn on the supply valve. This is the number one cause of warranty calls in the first week. Open the valve, run hot at the faucet to verify supply, try again. If IE persists, check whether the installer removed the protective cap from the inlet valve (some models ship with a plastic plug in the inlet port).
Water Pressure Requirements
LG dishwashers require 20-120 PSI inlet pressure. Below 20 PSI, fill rate is too slow for the timeout window. Above 120 PSI, the inlet valve solenoid struggles to close against the water pressure (this causes FE, not IE, but is worth noting). Sacramento city water typically runs 50-80 PSI — well within range. Low pressure at the dishwasher specifically often means a partially closed valve or restricted supply line rather than a whole-house pressure problem.
