What this KitchenAid vs Whirlpool comparison is based on#
Two federal complaint records are counted here: 46 CPSC SaferProducts incident reports naming a component on a KitchenAid refrigerator between 2011 and 2026, and 170 doing the same for a Whirlpool refrigerator across the same window. Each share belongs to its own column, and neither total counts refrigerators sold or in service.
One KitchenAid filing is worth roughly two percentage points, and one Whirlpool filing a little over half of one. Those two figures are worth keeping in view for every row below.
The same two components, in opposite order#
Both records are led by the compressor and the ice maker, and both put a lot of themselves into those two rows. What differs is which comes first.
Whirlpool's ice maker takes 34%, 58 filings, and its compressor 19%, 32 filings. KitchenAid's compressor takes 28%, thirteen filings, and its ice maker 15%, seven filings.
That swap accounts for the two widest differences on the page — the ice maker at 19 points in Whirlpool's direction, and the compressor at 9 points in KitchenAid's. They are not two independent findings; they are one reordering seen from both sides.
Which side of each gap can be trusted#
The Whirlpool figures are supported by 58 and 32 filings, which is enough for that column's ordering to be stable. The KitchenAid figures are thirteen and seven, which is not.
That asymmetry is the practical limit of this page. The claim "Whirlpool's reports name the ice maker most often, and by a wide margin over its compressor" is well founded. The claim "KitchenAid's reports name the compressor most often" rests on thirteen filings against seven — a six-report margin in a 46-report record, which a handful of reclassifications could erase.
So the reordering is real on one side and provisional on the other, and the page should not be read as two brands with genuinely inverted profiles.
The rows that lean KitchenAid, and why#
Three further rows show a higher KitchenAid share: the control board at 7% against 2%, three filings against four; the motor at 7% against 2%, three against four; and the wiring or power cord at 13% against 9%, six filings against sixteen.
Look at the counts in each of those. In two of the three, the KitchenAid share is higher while its filing count is lower — three reports against four. That is what a denominator of 46 does against a denominator of 170, and it is why none of those three rows should be read as a difference between the appliances.
The wiring row is the only one of the three with a real count on either side, and even there sixteen Whirlpool filings sit under the smaller percentage.
What the tails say, which is nothing#

A quick test for any comparison of unequal records#
