When it fails, the board loses honest feedback: read too warm and it runs the compressor continuously; read too cold and it barely runs at all. Either extreme wrecks food temperatures, and because the board also logs an F#E# code and may adjust other parameters to compensate, the visible symptom can look like a cooling fault when it is really a bad sensor.
Step-by-Step Instructions#
Step 1 — Prepare and gather information#
Unplug the refrigerator. The compressor start relay may hold a small charge — discharge it by shorting the terminals with an insulated screwdriver — and never puncture or heat the sealed system, which holds pressurized refrigerant. Locate your model number on the rating plate (Whirlpool refrigerators: inside the fresh food section, left wall) and record it for parts, then find the tech sheet (behind the base grille), which carries your wiring diagram and diagnostic entry sequence.
Step 2 — Enter diagnostic mode and record codes#
Enter Whirlpool diagnostic mode with the 3-button sequence from your tech sheet. Whirlpool uses F#E# codes where F is the functional system — F0 sealed system, F1 board communication, F3 sensors, F4 fans, F5 door, F7 motor/actuator, F8 water system, F9 defrost — and E is the specific error. Step 3 — Locate and access the thermistor#
The fresh-food thermistor clips to the evaporator cover or air channel in the fresh food section; the freezer thermistor clips to the evaporator frame inside the freezer behind the rear panel. Reach the freezer sensor by removing the freezer shelves and the rear freezer panel (6-8 Torx T20 screws); reach the fresh-food sensor behind its air-channel cover. Most Whirlpool internal fasteners are Torx T20, with some 1/4" hex at access panels.
Step 4 — Remove the failed thermistor#
Photograph the wiring before you disconnect anything, as your reassembly reference. Release the harness by pressing the locking tab and pulling the connector body, never the wires, then unclip the thermistor from its bracket. Note exactly where it sat — a thermistor moved even an inch into a different airflow reads a different temperature and will make the board misbehave just like a failed one.
Step 5 — Verify failure with testing#
Before fitting the new sensor, confirm the old one failed. Meter the thermistor's resistance and compare to the expected value at the current temperature: roughly 8-12K ohms at room temperature (about 72°F) and 30-50K ohms at freezer temperature (about 0°F). A reading far outside those means the thermistor is bad. You can test it in place by metering at the board connector for each thermistor and comparing to the value expected at the current ambient temperature — disconnect power first. Remember the resistance runs inverse to temperature: a warmer sensor reads lower ohms and a colder one reads higher, so a thermistor sitting in a 0°F freezer that reads a room-temperature 8-12K instead of the expected 30-50K is either mislocated in warm airflow or has drifted. Take the reading after the compartment has stabilized, not right after the door has been open, so ambient warmth does not fool you into condemning a good sensor. This step keeps you from replacing a good part when the real fault is upstream in the wiring or board.
Step 6 — Install the replacement#
Clip the new thermistor into the exact position and orientation of the original so it reads the same airflow, reconnect the harness until it seats with an audible click, and route the wire the same way. Tighten any bracket screws snug but not hard — Whirlpool uses plastic tabs on many parts that crack if overtightened.
Step 7 — Reassemble and verify#
Reinstall all panels and covers in reverse order and restore power. Re-enter diagnostic mode, clear any stored codes tied to the repair, and either use the forced-test function or run the refrigerator normally while you watch for correct behavior.
Step 8 — Post-repair monitoring#
Watch the refrigerator for 24-48 hours. Confirm temperatures return to the Accu-Chill setpoints (37°F fresh food, 0°F freezer) within 24 hours and that Adaptive Defrost runs without a new code. If the original code returns within 48 hours, the repair is incomplete or a secondary failure exists — re-enter diagnostic mode and check for new or recurring codes.
