KitchenAid KDFE / KDTE Dishwasher Repair Guide
Across the KitchenAid KDFE and KDTE front-control dishwashers, the F8E4 water-inlet error is the fault we chase most. This guide covers the shared platform, the ranked failures, every code with a diagnosis link, and the upkeep that keeps them out of the shop.
Models on this platform#
Manufactured from 2017 to 2026, these five variants share the same Whirlpool-built platform, filter, and parts:
- KDFE104HPS
- KDFE204KPS
- KDTE204KPS
- KDTE204GPS
- KDTE254ESS
Front controls are the visible difference from the KDTM pocket-handle line; internally the parts are interchangeable. A same-prefix model not listed above is still covered here.

Ranked failures#
- F8E4 water-inlet error — 20%. A failing inlet valve or low incoming water pressure.
- ProDry heater-relay on the control board fails — 14%. Dishes come out wet.
- SatinGlide Max rail bearing cracks — 12%. The upper rack jams or tilts.
- F5E2 door-latch micro-switch failure — 10%. The dishwasher will not start.
- Drain-pump impeller jams — 8%. Usually glass shards or food debris.
Error codes#
Each code below has a full diagnosis guide:
- Error F8E4 — click for full diagnosis and fix
- Error F5E2 — click for full diagnosis and fix
- Error F1E1 — click for full diagnosis and fix
- Error F2E2 — click for full diagnosis and fix
- Error F9E1 — click for full diagnosis and fix
For any other code, cut power for 60 seconds by unplugging the unit or flipping the breaker, then restore it. A fault that clears was transient; one that returns needs a technician.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Recall status#
No active recalls stand against the KDFE/KDTE series as of 2026-05-28. Recalls can appear at any time, so verify your model number periodically at the Consumer Product Safety Commission — cpsc.gov — or sign up for their email alerts.
Repair or replace?#
Because the KDFE/KDTE shares the durable Whirlpool platform, repairs are cost-effective in almost every case. The threshold is the standard one: under 10 years old and a fix below 50% of a new equivalent means repair; past 10 years, replace once cumulative repairs over the last two to three years exceed 40% of replacement cost.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Maintenance#
- Clean the multi-stage filter assembly monthly — it is the same filter used on the KDTM line.
- Run an affresh or vinegar cycle monthly to clear grease.
- Keep incoming water pressure at a minimum of 20 PSI to avoid the F8E4 fault.
- Inspect the SatinGlide rails quarterly for early wear.
Scrape but do not pre-rinse — the soil sensor needs a little food residue to pick the right cycle intensity.
Common questions#
Which problems are most common? The F8E4 inlet fault and the ProDry relay failure together drive the bulk of service calls.
How long should it last? Plan on 10–13 years with routine maintenance; wear on key parts climbs after the first 5–7 years.

Before you assume the worst#
Two of these faults are worth understanding first. The F8E4 inlet error is as often a plumbing issue as a valve issue — a partly closed supply valve or house pressure under the 20 PSI minimum will trip it, so rule those out before condemning the inlet valve. The ProDry relay failure is purely electrical: the relay that switches the drying heater burns on the control board, so dishes finish clean but wet while every other function works. The SatinGlide rails are a third known wear point — the rail bearings crack with age and load, letting the upper rack tilt or stick until new bearings restore the glide. None of these shorten the machine's life; they are routine repairs on a durable platform.
