Kenmore Dishwasher Vibrating or Shaking — Motor Balance and Mounting Issues
Excessive vibration from a Kenmore dishwasher transfers through the floor and cabinet, creating a disturbance heard throughout the house. The vibration source depends on your manufacturing platform — Whirlpool-built 665 models use a direct-drive circulation motor that vibrates when bearings wear, while LG-built 630 models use an Inverter Direct Drive motor that is inherently quieter but vibrates when its mounting isolators fail. Beyond the motor, all Kenmore platforms share common mounting and leveling issues that amplify any vibration source.
Leveling — The First Check on All Platforms
Before investigating mechanical components, verify your dishwasher is level. Every Kenmore dishwasher has adjustable front legs (and sometimes rear rollers) that must be set so the unit is level side-to-side and very slightly tilted toward the front (approximately 1/4 inch front-low) for proper drainage.
How to check:
- Place a bubble level on the tub floor (with racks removed) side-to-side.
- Check front-to-back on the tub floor.
- The bubble should be centered side-to-side and very slightly off-center front-to-back (front edge of bubble toward the door).
How to adjust:
- Whirlpool 665 models: Front legs have a hex nut that turns with a wrench. Turn clockwise to raise, counterclockwise to lower. The rear has roller wheels that are not adjustable on most models.
- LG 630 models: Front legs have a similar hex adjustment. Some models also have rear leg adjusters accessible from the back.
A dishwasher that is off-level by even 1/4 inch in any direction will vibrate noticeably during the wash phase as the water mass shifts and the spray arms create rotational forces.

Motor-Related Vibration by Platform
Whirlpool 665 Platform — Circulation Motor Bearing Wear
The circulation motor on Whirlpool-manufactured Kenmore dishwashers uses sealed ball bearings that wear over 8-12 years of service. As bearings degrade, the motor shaft develops play (measurable radial clearance where none should exist). This play allows the heavy impeller to orbit slightly off-center, creating a vibration that increases with motor speed.
Early bearing wear produces a barely noticeable hum. Advanced wear creates a pronounced vibration felt through the countertop during the wash phase. Terminal wear produces grinding noise followed by motor seizure.
DIY Difficulty: Difficult — motor replacement required Parts Cost: $85–$200 Professional Repair Cost: $250–$400
LG 630 Platform — Motor Mount Isolator Failure
LG-manufactured Kenmore dishwashers use rubber isolator mounts between the motor and the sump housing. These rubber components absorb motor vibration under normal operation. When the rubber degrades (hardens, cracks, or tears), motor vibration transmits directly to the tub and frame.
Unlike bearing wear which is progressive, isolator failure can happen relatively suddenly — the rubber maintains its properties for years then degrades rapidly over a few months due to heat exposure.
DIY Difficulty: Moderate — requires accessing motor mounts from below Parts Cost: $15–$40 for isolator set Professional Repair Cost: $130–$220
Repair Steps:
- Disconnect power and water.
- Pull the dishwasher out and lay it on its back.
- Remove the base plate to access the motor mounting area.
- Inspect the rubber isolators — look for cracks, tears, or compression marks.
- Remove the motor mounting bolts, replace the isolators, and reinstall.
- Ensure bolts are tight but do not overtighten (compressing the isolators defeats their purpose).
Spray Arm Imbalance
A cracked or partially blocked spray arm rotates unevenly, creating a pulsing vibration synchronized with the arm's rotation speed. This is audible as a rhythmic wub-wub-wub sound during the wash phase.
On Whirlpool 665 models: Remove the lower spray arm (pull straight up) and the upper arm (squeeze retainer tab at the feed tower connection). Hold each arm at its center and check for a heavy side — water trapped in a blocked nozzle makes one side heavier.
On LG 630 models: The lower spray arm unscrews counterclockwise. Check each nozzle for blockage. LG-platform arms have narrower nozzle openings that clog more readily with mineral deposits.
DIY Difficulty: Easy Parts Cost: $0 (cleaning) to $20–$40 (arm replacement) Professional Repair Cost: $90–$150

Drain Pump Vibration
The drain pump activates for 60-120 seconds between cycle phases and produces the most intense vibration event in the entire cycle. A failing drain pump — worn impeller, cracked housing, or seized bearing — amplifies this vibration dramatically.
On Whirlpool 665 models: The drain pump mounts on the main motor housing. If the pump's mounting tabs are cracked, the pump body can rattle against the housing.
On LG 630 models: The bayonet-connected drain pump can vibrate if not fully seated in the locked position. A pump that has partially rotated out of its lock position will vibrate freely during operation.
DIY Difficulty: Easy to Moderate Parts Cost: $35–$85 Professional Repair Cost: $120–$250

Cabinet and Countertop Mounting
All Kenmore dishwashers should be secured to the underside of the countertop with two mounting brackets. These brackets are at the top of the unit, one on each side. If these brackets are loose or missing, the entire dishwasher is free to vibrate within its cabinet opening.
Additionally, the dishwasher should sit in its cabinet opening with approximately 1/4 inch clearance on each side. If the unit is too tight against the cabinet walls, vibration transmits directly to the surrounding cabinetry (amplifying the sound). If there is too much gap, the unit can shift during operation.
Check and fix:
- Open the dishwasher door and look at the top edge — you should see mounting brackets screwed into the countertop underside.
- Tighten any loose screws. If screws have stripped the particleboard (common), use larger screws or toggle anchors.
- If no brackets are installed, purchase universal dishwasher mounting brackets ($5-10) and install them.

Sound Blanket Check
Kenmore dishwashers include a sound-dampening blanket (insulation pad) wrapped around the outer tub. This blanket can sag, shift, or fall off entirely over years — especially if the dishwasher was removed for kitchen remodeling and reinstalled. Without the blanket, motor and water noise transmit directly through the tub walls to the cabinet.
To check: Remove the dishwasher from the cabinet and inspect the outer tub surface. The blanket should cover the top and sides completely. Resecure with heat-resistant tape if it has shifted. Universal dishwasher insulation blankets ($20-40) are available if the original is missing.
When Vibration Indicates Imminent Failure
Vibration that worsens progressively over days or weeks indicates a mechanical failure advancing:
- Steady increase in vibration intensity: Motor bearing degradation — will progress to grinding then seizure
- Sudden onset of harsh vibration: Something has broken or come loose — inspect spray arms, drain pump, and motor mounts
- Vibration only during drain: Drain pump impeller damage — debris has chipped the impeller fins creating rotational imbalance
