How to Replace Whirlpool Washer Drain Pump

An F9 E1 drain-timeout means the machine could not empty in time. On Whirlpool WFW front-loaders and WTW top-loaders that points straight at the drain pump — but a pump humming while no water moves is often just a jammed impeller or a clogged filter, so check those before condemning the part. Unplug the washing machine and turn off water supply valves before beginning any repair. Have towels ready for residual water.

Step-by-step#

Step 1: Confirm the drain-pump diagnosis#

Read the code first — F9 E1 is the drain timeout that points at the pump (versus F5 E2 door lock, F0 E5 suds lock, F3 E1/E2 pressure sensor, or F2 E1/E3 motor/MCU). Enter diagnostics by holding the delay button 3 seconds then pressing power. A pump that hums but moves no water usually has a jammed impeller or blocked filter, not a dead motor.

Step 2: Access the pump#

Remove the front lower panel (1 Phillips each side) to reach the drain pump and lower components. Set a bucket and towels underneath, since the pump and hoses still hold water. Photograph the pump's wire and hose connections before you touch them — Whirlpool's color-coded connectors overlap and are easy to mix up.

Step 3: Clear the filter and impeller#

Before replacing anything, open the pump filter or access cap and clear coins, lint, and fabric, then spin the impeller by hand — if it is jammed or grinds, that alone may be the fault. If the impeller is free and clean but the pump still will not run, move on to replacing it.

Step 4: Remove the old pump#

Disconnect the pump's wire harness by pressing its locking tab and pulling the connector, not the wires. Squeeze the hose spring clamps with clamp pliers, slide them back, and pull both hoses off, catching the water. Release the pump from its mount (screws or a twist-lock depending on model).

Step 5: Install the new pump#

Seat the new pump in the same orientation, secure the mount, and reconnect both hoses with their clamps back in position. Push the wire connector on until the locking tab clicks — a partly seated connector is the top cause of an immediate repeat failure and can damage the board.

Step 6: Verify before closing up#

With the machine still open, plug in and run the diagnostic drain test so you can exercise just the pump without a full cycle, and confirm it drains and no hose weeps. Then unplug and reassemble.

Step 7: Reassemble and full test#

Refit the panels; on a front-loader keep the bellow drain holes at the 6 o'clock position, and reseat the drain hose to a 6-8 inch insertion depth in the standpipe so it cannot siphon. Run a Normal warm cycle and watch the drain and spin for leaks, noise, and codes.
