Match the code to the part#
Before buying anything, enter diagnostic mode (hold the delay button 3 seconds, then press power) and read the stored code against your tech sheet, since many codes point to wiring or a sensor rather than a failed part. The general swap procedure#
1 - Open the machine to the part. Take off the top panel (3 Phillips at the rear, slide back and lift). For lower parts, pull the front lower panel (1 Phillips each side); for full drum access, unhook the bellow's outer band with needle-nose pliers, then remove the front panel (4 to 6 Torx T20 screws).
2 - Photograph and disconnect. Snap a photo of every connector before you touch it, since Whirlpool's color coding repeats across harnesses. Press each locking tab and pull connectors by the body, and catch residual water from any pump or valve in a shallow pan.
3 - Remove and fit the part. Note the screw or clip positions, remove the old part, and seat the new one in the exact same orientation. Secure the hardware first, then push each connector home until the tab clicks, since a half-seated plug is the top cause of an immediate repeat fault.
4 - Verify then reassemble. With the machine still open, run the diagnostic test so you can watch the new part respond without a full cycle, then refit the panels, aligning the bellow drain holes to 6 o'clock on a front-loader, and run a Normal cycle watching for leaks and codes.
Model-specific notes#
- Adaptive Wash (WFW): after a sensor or board swap, allow 2 to 3 cycles for the load-sensing to recalibrate.
- Deep Water Wash (WTW): this option overrides the auto-fill sensor, so try it before assuming a fill fault.
- Shift actuator (WTW): an F7 E1 is almost always the actuator, not the motor, so test it first.

Troubleshooting after the swap#
- A code returns at once: a wire harness is not fully seated, so reopen the machine and re-check every connector you touched.
- Vibration is worse than before: a counterweight bolt loosened during access, or the cabinet did not reseat on its spring clips. Verify every mounting point.
- Front leak on a WFW: the bellow was not seated properly; confirm the outer band is fully engaged and the bellow drain holes sit at the bottom.
- Fills then immediately drains: the drain hose slipped deeper into the standpipe during the work. Reseat it to a 6 to 8 inch insertion depth.
