GE Splutch Assembly: Causes & Fix
Loud grinding or scraping that happens specifically during spin on a GE top-load usually means the splutch — GE's spin-clutch — has worn out. It is the component that engages the spin basket to the transmission output, and once the clutch pads wear they slip against each other and grind. Replacing it is an advanced…
Allow 30 minutes for diagnosis and 30-90 minutes for the repair. Unplug the machine and close the water valves. Tools: putty knife, Phillips #2, multimeter, pliers, towels.
Make sure it is the splutch#
Three GTW faults make noise or stop the spin, and they are not interchangeable:
| What you hear | Component | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Grinding or scraping through spin | Splutch clutch pads worn | Replace the splutch cam and spring kit |
| Rhythmic banging at high spin | Suspension rod Teflon slides worn | Replace all four slides as a set |
| Agitates normally, never spins | Shift actuator on the gearcase | Replace the actuator, then run a diagnostic cycle |
| Grinding plus oil below | Transmission failing | Usually past the point of economic repair |
That last row is the one to check before ordering anything. Oil leakage under a grinding machine changes the answer from a clutch kit to a decision about the machine.

Getting in#
Access is the same technique as a GE dryer top panel: a putty knife into the seam to release the spring clips, then tip the cabinet back. That exposes the transmission at the bottom of the tub, where the shift actuator lives on the gearcase and the suspension rods hang from the frame.
The suspension rods are worth inspecting while you are there. Each of the four carries a Teflon slide pad at the top which should be smooth and whole. Grooved, cracked or missing pads stick and release under load, and that stick-slip is what throws the machine around at speed. Replace all four together — one fresh pad among three worn ones just moves the problem.
The rest of the GTW list#
A washer that fills but neither agitates nor spins, and looks dead with the lid down, is a failed lid switch. It sits under the top panel near the lid hinge, reached by flipping the console up, and a continuity test with the lid closed settles it. If yours uses a magnetic switch, confirm the magnet is still in the lid and in the right place. Never bypass this switch — it exists to stop the machine running with the lid open.
Safety First — Know the Risks
High-voltage components and pressurized water lines create flood and shock risk. A single loose fitting can cause thousands in water damage. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

If yours is a front-loader#
The GFW platform fails elsewhere. Water left in the tub means the drain pump WH23X24178 or its filter behind the lower front panel — open the filter cap slowly with a pan underneath, because a clogged pump holds a tub's worth of water. A door that clicks but never locks is the door lock assembly WH44X27819, which is not repairable; check the strike hook for bending too. Excessive shaking is worn shock absorbers WH01X27538, replaced in pairs and tested by pressing the tub down through the door. The Dynamic Balancing Technology ring holds fluid that redistributes during spin to offset imbalance, but it never wears out and cannot rescue a load bunched to one side. SmartDispense that stops dispensing is usually thickened detergent in the tank and siphon tubes, which warm water flushes clear.
Diagnostic mode and codes#
Front-load machines enter diagnostics with Signal and Delay Start held together for 3 seconds, then step through door lock, fill, drain and spin individually — watch which step fails. Top-load machines use the cycle selector knob: one click clockwise, three counterclockwise, one clockwise, and all the indicators should light to confirm entry.
Codes on the front-load LED panel run E1 for water level, E2 for door lock, E4 for drain and dE for a door error. Top-load machines without a display flash the lid lock indicator in patterns instead. On a Profile model with Wi-Fi, check stored fault history in the SmartHQ app before you take anything apart — it often names the component outright. One quirk: OdorBlock runs the drain pump briefly after cycles to keep the sump dry, so a pump that never runs between loads, or never stops, points at the board timer rather than the pump.
