How to Repair a GE Washing Machine
Most GE washer faults trace to a handful of parts that differ by cabinet — front-load GFW machines fail at the drain pump, door lock, and shocks, while top-load GTW machines fail at the shift actuator, splutch, suspension slides, and lid switch. Diagnose first, then swap the one part; repairs run 30-90 minutes.

Front-load (GFW) faults#
Won't drain. Water left in the tub or a drain code usually means a clogged or failed drain pump (GE WH23X24178). Open the filter behind the lower front panel over a pan, unscrew the cap counterclockwise, and clear the debris; if the pump hums without moving water or the impeller is broken, replace it.
Door won't lock. A washer that will not start, sometimes clicking at the door without the lock light, points at a failed door lock (GE WH44X27819). Reach it behind the top and front-panel edge, meter it for continuity in the lock and unlock states, and replace it — the lock is not repairable — after confirming the door strike is not bent.
Shakes and walks. Violent spin vibration is usually worn shock absorbers (GE WH01X27538) between the outer tub and the base, letting the tub swing into the cabinet. Press down on the tub through the door and release — one settling oscillation is fine, several bounces means worn shocks, replaced in pairs. GE's Dynamic Balancing ring, a fluid-filled counterbalance, cannot fix a load bunched to one side, so level the machine and redistribute the load too.
SmartDispense not dosing. On GE Profile units, detergent that will not release or doses wrong is usually the SmartDispense bulk-tank pump clogged with thickened detergent. Pull the tank, flush it and the siphon tubes with warm water, and refit; if the dispense pump itself is silent during fill, replace that motor.
Top-load (GTW) faults#
Won't spin. A washer that agitates but never spins is the shift actuator, the motor-driven mode shifter on the gearcase that moves the transmission between agitate and spin. Tip the cabinet back on its spring clips, unplug the actuator on the transmission, swap it, and run a diagnostic cycle.
Grinding in spin. Loud grinding only during spin is a worn splutch — GE's spin-clutch assembly that couples the basket to the transmission output. Its pads slip and grind as they wear; replacing the splutch cam and spring kit means pulling the agitator and tub, and oil at the bottom points instead at a failing transmission that rarely pays to fix.
Rhythmic banging. Thumping at high spin is worn suspension-rod slides — four rods with Teflon pads that stick and release once the Teflon wears. Tip the cabinet, inspect all four, and replace the slide kit as a set if any are grooved or cracked.
Dead with the lid closed. Fills but will not agitate or spin, or seems dead, is usually a failed lid switch. Flip the console up, find the switch under the top panel by the hinge, meter it for continuity with the lid closed, and replace it if open — checking the lid magnet is still in place on magnetic-switch models.

Diagnostic modes#
GE front-loaders enter diagnostics with Signal and Delay Start held together for 3 seconds, then step through each component — watch for the step that fails. Top-loaders enter by rotating the cycle knob one click clockwise, three counterclockwise, one clockwise, until all the LEDs light.
Reading the codes#
GE front-loaders show codes on the LED panel: E1 is water level, E2 is the door lock, E4 is drain, and dE is a door error. Top-loaders without a display flash the lid-lock LED in patterns instead. On a Profile with WiFi, check the app's stored fault history before you open anything, since it often names the exact part. GE's OdorBlock runs the drain pump briefly after cycles, so a pump that runs nonstop or never between loads suggests a board timer fault.
