Safety. Unplug the dryer. On a gas model, close the shutoff valve behind the machine — the quarter-turn lever. Give it 5 minutes before you touch element wiring.

Try cleaning before you buy anything#

The residue theory is cheap to test. The bars sit inside the drum where clothes pass over them repeatedly, and a coating you can barely see is enough to skew the reading. Clean them thoroughly, run a real load on an automatic cycle, and see whether the machine now stops at the right dryness. If it does, you have your answer and you have spent nothing.

If cleaning changes nothing, or the bars are visibly pitted, scored or loose in their mounting, replacement is the next step.

Getting in#

Pull the dryer away from the wall for rear access. The top panel comes off with 2 Phillips screws at the rear — slide it back and lift. That exposes the controls and the upper area. Removing the front panel exposes the drum, which is what you need for bar access. Some rear-mounted parts, including the heating element and the thermal fuse on certain models, are reachable from the rear panel alone without going any further.

Doing the swap#

Frigidaire's fastener choices are refreshingly ordinary here, so the job is about care rather than technique.

Testing what you did#

Reassemble the panels, plug in and run a timed-dry cycle for 10 minutes. The drum should turn smoothly, the exhaust air should be hot, nothing should sound wrong and no code should appear. Gas owners should see a flame through the lower front inspection port.

Then run a full cycle with a small load and watch the first 10 minutes for noise, heat at the vent and steady drum speed. Because you were in there for the sensors specifically, the real test comes at the end: the automatic cycle should now stop at the correct dryness rather than quitting early.

When the symptom survives the repair#

• Same problem afterwards. There is a second fault. Dryer failures cascade — a restricted exhaust blows the thermal fuse and slowly cooks the element — so test the whole heat chain rather than one part of it.
• New noise. A reassembly issue: a panel not fully seated, a misrouted belt, or a screwdriver still inside the cabinet.
• Intermittent operation. A spade connector that is not fully home, or a component that passes cold and fails hot.
• Runs but the exhaust is weak. The vent path is blocked, and that is the root cause behind most heat-related failures on these machines. Fix it or you will be back.

Useful things to know about the platform#

Frigidaire is owned by Electrolux and most dryer components are shared between the brands, gas valve assemblies included, which widens your parts options considerably. The model number is on a sticker inside the door frame or on the rear panel, and prefixes tell you what you have: EFME and FFRE for electric, FFRG for gas. Gallery and Professional series use IQ-Touch capacitive controls, which are moisture-sensitive — an unresponsive panel often recovers after 5 minutes unplugged. Base models use mechanical knobs and have no such quirk.

Expect 12-15 years overall, with the element typically 8-12 years, belts 8-15, rollers 8-12 and the motor 12-15. All of those are economic repairs.
