GE GFE24 Refrigerator — Issues & Fixes
The most common GE GFE24 problem is an ice maker that stops producing — about 22% of repairs — usually a failed inlet valve or a frozen fill tube.
The GFE24 is a 23.7 cu. ft. French-door refrigerator with an internal water dispenser, so its faults center on the ice, defrost, and cooling systems. Below are the covered models, the recurring problems, and a repair-or-replace line.

Common problems for this model#
| Rank | Failure | Share of repairs |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ice maker stops — inlet valve fails or fill tube freezes | 22% |
| 2 | Defrost heater fails — frost on the coil, both sections warm | 16% |
| 3 | Fan motor bearings wear — buzzing from the freezer | 14% |
| 4 | Water dispenser drips — a continuous slow drip | 10% |
| 5 | Door seal weakens — condensation on the frame, compressor overworks | 8% |
Error codes#
- Error FF — freezer fan / defrost fault
For an unlisted code, unplug or trip the breaker for 60 seconds and restore power; a returning code needs a diagnosis.

Recall status#
There are no active recalls on the GE GFE24 series as of 2026-05-28. Check your model against the Consumer Product Safety Commission list at cpsc.gov periodically.
Repair or replace?#
For the GFE24: under 10 years old with a fix below 50% of a comparable new unit, repair. After 10 years, weigh it against the total repair history before spending more. Ice-maker, defrost, and fan repairs are all inexpensive; a failing compressor on an older unit is the case that tips toward replacement.
The Real Cost of DIY
Average DIY attempt: $150-400 in tools you may use once, plus the risk of further damage. Our diagnostic visit costs $0 — we find the problem and give you an honest quote.

Before you call#
Check the temperature settings and make sure the vents between the freezer and fridge are not blocked by food. Replace the water filter if it is overdue, confirm the water supply line is not kinked, and clean the condenser coils behind the bottom grille. For ice trouble, cycle the ice maker off and back on.
Keeping it healthy#
Replace the water filter every 6 months for the best ice and water, and clean the condenser coils once a year. Avoid overloading the door bins, and check the door seals with the dollar-bill test annually, since a weak seal makes the compressor work harder and drives up the frost and dispenser problems above.
Don't Void Your Warranty
Opening your appliance yourself may void the manufacturer warranty. Our repair comes with a 90-day guarantee, and we document everything for warranty compliance.

FAQ#
What is the difference between the GFE24 and GFE26?#
The GFE26 is the larger sibling at 25.6 versus 23.7 cu. ft., adding TwinChill dual evaporators and Turbo Cool, while the GFE24 uses a single evaporator. The two share similar reliability and failure modes, so the GFE26 mainly makes sense if you want more space and independent humidity control between compartments.
How do I reset the GFE24 water-filter indicator?#
After swapping the filter, press and hold the Reset Water Filter button for 3 seconds until the indicator turns green; some models want Lock and Water Filter pressed together. Run 2-3 gallons through the dispenser afterward to flush the new filter.
Why does my GFE24 make a popping noise?#
Popping is usually normal — the plastic interior panels expand and contract as temperatures shift during the defrost cycle. If it is loud and rhythmic, though, check the evaporator fan for ice contact, which a failed defrost cycle can cause.
