Frigidaire Microwave F3: Touch Panel Key Stuck
What F3 Means
F3 on Frigidaire microwaves is the equivalent of the dishwasher's Er code: the control board detects a continuous closed circuit on one of the keypad membrane contacts. The board interprets this as a permanently pressed button and locks out all input.
Unlike the dishwasher's Er code, F3 on microwaves carries a slightly different concern. If the stuck key corresponds to a cooking start function, the board's lockout prevents accidental unattended operation.

Common Causes
Steam damage to the membrane keypad. Over-the-range microwaves mounted above the cooktop absorb cooking steam from below. This steam penetrates the keypad edge seal faster than on countertop units. Gallery over-the-range models have better sealing than standard models, but both are vulnerable to years of steam exposure.
Worn overlay from heavy use. The Start and Add 30 Seconds buttons receive the most presses. The adhesive spacer beneath these buttons compresses first, allowing the conductive layers to bridge.
Cleaning product infiltration. Spraying cleaner directly onto the control panel allows liquid to seep behind the overlay through button edges or screw holes. The liquid creates conductive paths between traces.
Diagnosis
Pull the plug or flip the breaker. Wait five minutes. Restore power. If F3 appears immediately without touching any button, the membrane has a permanent short. If the microwave powers up normally and F3 only appears when pressing near a specific area, that button zone has the fault.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Microwave capacitors store lethal voltage (4,000V+) even when unplugged. This is the single most dangerous DIY appliance repair. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Repair
The membrane keypad overlay is a single replaceable unit. Part numbers are model-specific (check the label inside the door). Cost: $30-$80.
- Remove the microwave outer cabinet or control panel housing (varies by mounting type).
- Disconnect the ribbon cable from the control board.
- Peel the old overlay from the front face. Clean adhesive residue with isopropyl alcohol.
- Apply the new overlay, aligning carefully from one edge. Press firmly to bond.
- Connect the new ribbon. Reassemble and test every button.

Prevention for Over-the-Range Models
Install a ventilation fan speed high enough to divert cooking steam away from the microwave underside during stovetop cooking. Wipe the control panel dry after steamy cooking sessions. Never spray cleaner directly on the panel. Instead, spray onto a cloth and then wipe.
FAQ
Can I use the microwave at all with F3? No. F3 locks out all functions because the board cannot distinguish real input from the phantom signal.
F3 appeared after cleaning the control panel. Connection? Very likely. Cleaning solution infiltrated behind the overlay through button edges. Allow 24-48 hours to dry completely. If F3 persists after drying, the solution created permanent conductive residue.
Is F3 the same on countertop and over-the-range models? Same code, same meaning. Over-the-range models are more susceptible due to cooking steam exposure from below.
