Frigidaire Dishwasher Making Noise? Causes & Fix
Time the noise, do not just describe it. Noise during **fill** is the inlet valve. Noise during **wash** is the motor or the spray arm. Noise during **drain** is the drain pump. That single observation eliminates most of the diagnostic work, and two of the five causes below cost nothing to fix.
The five causes, ranked#
| Cause | Share of cases | What it sounds like | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wash motor bearing failure | 30% | Continuous grinding or humming, often intermittent at first then constant | Wash |
| Debris in the drain pump | 25% | Grinding, crunching or rattling | Drain |
| Spray arm hitting items | 20% | Knock-knock-knock, once per revolution | Wash |
| Water inlet valve | 15% | Buzzing (normal) or hammering (not normal) | Fill |
| Chopper blade worn, if fitted | 10% | Grinding | Wash |
Working through them#
Wash motor bearings. The circulation pump bearings wear and produce a continuous grind or hum through the wash cycle. On Frigidaire the motor sits under the tub, accessible from below. There is a second symptom worth checking for: a failing motor also drops wash pressure, so if cleaning performance has quietly declined alongside the noise, that is your confirmation rather than a separate problem.
Debris in the drain pump. Glass shards, bones, fruit pits and broken dish fragments get past the filter into the impeller. Remove the drain filter and inspect the pump area with a flashlight; needle-nose pliers get the pieces out. This one is free if you do it yourself.
Spray arm hitting something. Tall items in the bottom rack, or a badly placed utensil, stop the arm and it knocks against the obstruction on every revolution. The test takes ten seconds: with the rack loaded, spin the arm by hand — it should turn a full circle without touching anything.
Inlet valve. A loud buzz during fill is normal. Hammering is not: that is water hammer, caused either by high supply pressure or a failing valve. Pressure above 80 PSI causes valve chatter, and the fix is a pressure regulator or a new valve.
Chopper blade. Some Frigidaire dishwashers have a food chopper that breaks down particles. A worn blade grinds. This is expected wear rather than a fault — replace it, or clean the filter more often and get by without.

Models this comes up on most#
FFCD2413US, FGIP2468UF and GDPP4517AF.
Worth knowing about the platform: Frigidaire is manufactured by Electrolux and shares the Electrolux platform. Gallery models add features over base Frigidaire, and Professional models use commercial-grade components — which is why two Frigidaire dishwashers of similar age can wear differently.
Before you open anything#
Disconnect power at the circuit breaker or unplug the unit. Then find your exact model number on the serial plate, typically inside the door frame, on the rear panel or under the lid — parts and procedures follow the model, not the brand. If there is a digital display, note any error code, which narrows things immediately. Work the highest-probability cause first, check the accessible parts for visible damage, then restore power and run a test cycle, watching the first 10-15 minutes to see whether the noise returns.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Is it safe to keep using?#
Clicking or knocking from a spray arm hitting dishes is safe — reload and carry on. Motor grinding means the bearings are going: safe in the short term, but it will get worse. Grinding from the drain pump with debris in it can damage the pump if you leave it, so clear that one. Any electrical burning smell means stop and unplug immediately.
Call a technician if the noise survives the basic checks, if you see sparking or smell burning, or if the machine is still under warranty, where a professional diagnosis preserves the coverage.
