Frigidaire Dishwasher i50: The Board Cannot Power the Drain Pump
i50 Is Not a Drain Blockage
i20 means the pump ran but water did not leave (physical blockage). i50 means the board fired the triac gate signal and the sense resistor read zero amps (electronic or motor failure). The pump never turned on.

How the Drive Circuit Works
The drain pump receives AC power through a triac on the main control board. The board sends a gate signal to the triac, opening it for current flow. A sense resistor monitors the circuit. Zero current after the gate fires means either the triac blew open or the motor winding opened.
Triac Failure Mechanisms
Inductive kickback. When the pump motor shuts off, the collapsing magnetic field produces reverse voltage (back-EMF). A snubber circuit absorbs this on healthy boards. Degraded snubber components allow repeated spikes that damage the triac junction.
Thermal fatigue. The triac carries 1-2 amps and heats during drain cycles. After thousands of heat-cool cycles, solder joints develop microscopic cracks that eventually break continuity.
Safety First — Know the Risks
Live 120V wiring in a wet environment is one of the most dangerous DIY scenarios. Water + electricity = serious shock risk. Our techs are licensed and insured — let them handle the risk.

Board vs. Motor Diagnosis
Before buying a $120-$200 board:
- Pull the breaker. Remove the kick plate. Find the pump two-pin connector and disconnect.
- Measure resistance across the pump motor leads.
- 5-30 ohms: Motor is healthy. Board triac is the failure. Replace the board.
- OL (infinite): Motor winding burned open. Replace the pump.
- Under 2 ohms: Shorted winding. Replace both pump and board.
Repair Options
Board replacement (5304504782 standard, 807024801 Gallery, $120-$200). Open the inner door panel (Torx T-20). Photograph connectors. Release mounting clips. Transfer connectors individually to the new board. Touch grounded metal before handling.
Board-level triac repair ($5-$15 parts, $100-$150 labor). Replace the triac (BTA16-600B or equivalent) plus snubber components. Requires PCB soldering skill. Not all service companies offer this.
Pump replacement (154580301 or 5304519906, $35-$80). If motor tested open. Bayonet or screw mount from below.

Cost Comparison
| Path | Parts | Labor | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Board replacement | $120-$200 | $80-$120 | $200-$320 |
| Triac-level repair | $5-$15 | $100-$150 | $105-$165 |
| Pump (open motor) | $35-$80 | $80-$120 | $115-$200 |
Repair Economics
Frigidaire dishwashers average 12-14 years. Board replacement at $200-$320 for a unit under nine years old buys three to five more years. If the motor is shorted (requiring both pump and board), the combined $300-$400 cost still makes sense for units under seven years old versus $700-$1,200 for replacement plus installation.

FAQ
Can I keep using the dishwasher with i50? No. The drain pump cannot receive power. Water remains in the tub after every cycle.
Why did the triac blow? Usually age-related snubber degradation. Less commonly, an intermittently shorting motor drew excess current through the triac.
New board's triac blew within months. What happened? The pump motor has a developing winding short. It tests normal cold but draws excess current when hot and running. Replace the pump.
i50 requires board-level diagnosis. Our technicians verify board vs. motor before ordering parts. Schedule your diagnostic.
